Meghan and Harry’s nightmare exposed – ‘there is no trust’
It seemed bridges were slowly being built between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the royal family in recent weeks.
But with the release of Omid Scobie’s scathing new book, Endgame, have these bridges been well and truly burnt?
Scobie has made a string of bombshell allegations in the book, including that Prince William made attempts to upstage his father King Charles, and that the Princess of Wales is “cold” and ignored Meghan’s “cries for help”.
He also claims the King referred to Harry as “that fool” after the release of his Netflix documentary.
It comes just weeks after Harry, 39, and Meghan, 42, called the King to wish him a happy 75th birthday, marking their first conversation in six months.
He reportedly received a video message from his grandchildren, Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two, as well. More recently, it was even rumoured Harry and Meghan would be open to an invite to Christmas at Sandringham Palace if it was offered.
But royal expert Duncan Larcombe claims the book has ruined the chance of a reconciliation.
“It has put them right back to square one,” he tells us. “There’s now pressure being put on Harry to come out and distance himself from the book, and I think that will be very tempting for him to do because it seems he has been trying to soften his tone towards the royals.
“There were some green shoots that he might be trying to end the feud from his side. So the timing of the book couldn’t be worse for Harry. I think it’s his worst nightmare.”
While Omid has insisted that he was not briefed by Harry and Meghan, Duncan believes people will always be suspicious of Meghan. Having previously said she “did not contribute” to Omid and co-author Carolyn Durand’s 2020 book, Finding Freedom, she later apologised for forgetting that she had authorised an aide to provide the authors with some information.
Duncan says, “It doesn’t matter what Meghan says as, frankly, I don’t think everyone will believe her. In my opinion people will always conclude that she’s played some kind of indirect role in some of the information that Scobie has revealed.
“There will also be suspicions in the Palace that this has Meghan’s fingerprints over it. There are some astonishing claims in it.”
Omid has claimed he spoke to those around the couple for his tell-all account, saying there are “enough people in their orbit who know the ins and outs”. It will no doubt make Harry and Meghan even more paranoid about who they can and cannot trust, Duncan says.
“Harry has always found it hard to trust people,” he says. “Since moving to California, they’ve kept a very small circle of friends.”
He adds that Meghan will particularly feel she can’t trust anyone, following past issues she’s had with her father Thomas and half-sister Samantha.
“Meghan keeps her guard very carefully up at all times,” Duncan says. “I’m not sure you can have her level of fame without always thinking, ‘Who am I talking to? What am I saying? And what might happen as a result?’”
In the book, Omid has claimed that Charles and Meghan exchanged letters following the infamous Oprah Winfrey interview, which reportedly reveal the identity of two people the Duchess claimed had raised “concerns” about Archie’s skin colour.
Duncan says this won’t have gone down well at the Palace.
“It will have been really frustrating for Charles and William,” he says. “Whether they’ll hold Harry personally responsible, we’re yet to see. But it’s a hornet’s nest that has resurfaced the issue of this alleged royal racist. It’s an issue that won’t go away and that is bad for the royals.
“Charles will have hoped that it was all in the past and that the water was flowing under the bridge, but this book has just completely ripped it open again.”
Will there be any way back for Harry and his family now?
“I think you can never say never,” Duncan says. “Camilla went from being one of the most hated people in Britain to becoming our Queen. If she can pull that off, I don’t think you can ever say there’s no chance for Harry.
"But this book has made it less likely. And it seems that at this moment, there is no hope whatsoever.”
