Vera star shares bittersweet message with fans after confirming exit from ITV show | The Sun
VERA star Kenny Doughty took to social media yesterday to share a bittersweet message with fans after confirming his exit from the series earlier this year.
Kenny, 48, has played DS Aiden Heely on the ITV crime drama since 2015, but is now officially handing over his detective badge.
He announced the news on Instagram in March of this year. Kenny also paid a sweet tribute to the series and his co-star Brenda Blethyn, who plays the titular character Vera.
“After 8 years & 35 Vera films, I’ve made the difficult decision of handing over DS Healy’s badge. I can confirm I am leaving Vera,” he said.
He continued: “I want to thank everyone who’s made this amazing time so joyous, ITV, Silverprint, all the brilliant cast and crew BUT of course my buddy & inspiration Brenda Blethyn.
“The perfect leading star who I owe so much to. I feel lucky to have you as a friend. You make me howl with laughter & have been a rock for me over the years. I can’t thank you enough. Precious times.

“And finally, the Vera fans: without you and your support, I would never have made so many films. You really are the best fans in the world. Thank you so much for your loyalty & love for the show,” he concluded.
Happily for Vera fans, that wasn’t Kenny’s last message to ITV viewers. He shared another bittersweet on Instagram yesterday alongside a picture of himself and Brenda, 77.
Kenny announced a major success for the show, writing: “So proud we have been nominated for an NTA at this year’s awards. And in my final series!! Fingers crossed & good luck to all the nominations!”
Fans quickly flooded his comments with congratulations, but others were quickly reminded that he won’t be returning for Series 13 of Vera.

“Well deserved and long overdue,” said one fan, while a second posted a sweet message of thanks to the star. “Will miss you in the new series. Thanks for the great acting over the years,” they wrote.
“Wonderful to go out on a high. Good luck in your new ventures,” added another.
Ibinabo Jack, who has played DC Jacqueline ‘Jac’ Williams since 2018, is also departing the series.
One familiar face is making a return to ITV in the upcoming season of the crime drama, though. David Leon is reprising the role of DS Joe Ashworth, who he played from 2011 to 2014.
The next season of Vera is scheduled to air in 2024.
