Who is Great British Menu 2021 finalist Alex Bond?

YORKSHIREMAN Alex Bond is determined to become Great British Menu’s champion of champions after winning the starter crown.

Here’s what we know about the skilful chef.

Who is Great British Menu 2021 finalist Alex Bond?

Alex has been a chef for more than 20 years.

He has worked at several Michelin-starred restaurants, including 42 The Calls in Leeds, Auberge du Lac in Hertfordshire and The Wild Rabbit in Oxfordshire.

Alex is aiming to win GBM by using fine produce and plenty of flavour.

This year is his second appearance on the show after losing to Ruth Hansom in 2020's regional heat, agonisingly finishing in second.

Ruth went on to win the amuse-bouche course but failed to become the champion of champions when Niall Keating secured victory in the finale.

Alex managed to defeat Ruth this year, overcoming her, Tom Spenceley and Gareth Bartram to secure his place in the show's Final Week.

And he's made an excellent start, winning the starter crown to qualify for the grand finale.

Also through is fish champion Roberta Hall-McCarron.

Alex will be hoping to beat Roberta and his fellow finalists and win the 16th series of the prestigious BBC show.

When was he awarded a Michelin star?

Alex currently runs Alchemilla in Nottingham and has helped the restaurant achieve significant success in recent years.

Alchemilla was awarded a Michelin star in 2019, receiving four AA Rosettes and a place in the Good Food Guide’s top 50 restaurants a year later.

The Guardian’s restaurant critic Grace Dent visited Alex’s place in 2018, describing it as ‘quite gorgeous’ and giving the food an 8/10 rating.

The service was also marked very highly, receiving a 9/10 rating.

Alchemilla offers five, seven and even TEN course meals, with prices beginning at £65 per person.

The restaurant does constantly change it’s dishes but a tasting menu is available to view via their website.

Alchemilla was also placed on the AA’s notable wine list in 2020, with prices going up to £195 per bottle.

When is the Great British Menu 2021 final on TV and how can I watch it?

The GBM final will be shown on BBC2 at 8pm (UK time) on Friday, May 21.

If you’re not able to watch it at that time, the final will be available on BBC iPlayer after it has been aired.

The other 28 episodes in series 16 are also available to watch on the streaming platform.
