Who is America’s Least-Liked TV News Personality?

The least-liked TV news personality in America is also a person whose name has made headlines recently after causing controversy and delivering an on-air apology.

The Wrap cited Q Scores, which are widely-used entertainment industry indicators measuring one’s likeability when revealing the results of who ranked as the most unpopular media personality.

Megyn Kelly had the lowest score among all anchors and newscasters. According to the Q Scores Company,  the former Fox journalist had a Positive Q Score of just 8. The higher the Positive Q Score the more that celebrity or brand is liked, the lower the Q score means the opposite.

Kelly’s dismal score was recorded in September 2018, showing that she wasn’t winning any popularity contests even before her comments defending “blackface.”

On Oct. 23, 2018, during a segment on Megyn Kelly Today while discussing Halloween costumes with a panel she asked, “What is racist? Because you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid that was OK, as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character.”

Kelly’s remarks caused immediate backlash on social media and days later it was announced that her morning show was canceled.

Despite her not being among America’s favorite people on TV and Today’s third hour dipping 13% in the Nielsen ratings since her debut on the network, Kelly still had a huge contract with NBC of $23 million a year. It’s a sum that the network may be forced to pay out.

“You’ve seen her ratings. There was a desire to make it work,” a source told People. “They could have fired her based on the ratings alone, but they were supporting her and the show. She had some momentum in August and September, and they wanted to make it work. But people were so upset with what she said. Who was going to come on her show? Who was she going to book? People were saying they’d never come back.”

The source added that Kelly is now “in talks about her exit. They don’t want her there, and she doesn’t want to be there. She wanted to leave anyway. She’s been unhappy at NBC. She’s not happy about how this went down, but she wanted to leave.”

Some other names joining Kelly as the least-liked on-air personalities include MSNBC’s Hardball host Chris Matthews, MSNBC’s Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough, CBS This Morning co-host Norah O’Donnell, and Fox News’ Sean Hannity.

On the other side of the coin, the most-liked on TV are ABC World News Tonight anchor David Muir followed by Fox News Sunday Chris Wallace and Good Morning America co-anchor Lara Spencer.
