The Witcher, starring Henry Cavill as Geralt, the mutated monster hunter, is returning to carry on his mission of destroying deadly beasts. Two years after series one, Netflix subscribers are excited to see what’s in store for them this time around. Express.co.uk has everything you need to know about whereabouts filming took place for series two of The Witcher.

Where is The Witcher season 2 set?

The Witcher is believed to be set on Earth on an unnamed Continent which is where the Northern Kingdoms and the Nilfgaardian Empire lie.

Except in this world, there is magic, dragons and other mystical creatures that Geralt (played by Henry Cavill) has to deal with.

There is also no clear-cut answer in terms of what time period the fantasy series is set.

But going by the look of the show, it could be around the 15th Century, potentially earlier, during the Renaissance era.

Where is The Witcher season 2 filmed?

The backdrop of The Witcher was stunning in the first series with filming taking place all over the world.

From Budapest and the Czech Republic to Gran Canaria and Austria, the cast and crew travelled to get the perfect scenery for the show.

However, this did not happen for the second series of The Witcher.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the production company of the Netflix series wasn’t able to film abroad.

So, instead, filming for season two took place around the United Kingdom.

The crew spent around five months filming for the series, much of which was spent in Cumbria, in and around the beautiful Lake District.

Some of the locations included Hodge Close Quarry, the Rydal Caves and the Lake of Blea Tarn.

Another key location was Ilkley Moor in Yorkshire which has the Cow and Calf, a large rock formation that’s popular with climbing enthusiasts.

Filming also took place further south in Surrey where Cavill was spotted in full costume at Frensham Little Pond.

The town was also recreated by Netflix at Arborfield Studios in Wokingham which was also the home of Disney’s Aladdin live-action remake.

When the cast and crew left Yorkshire, Cavill posted on Instagram: “Thank you for hosting all of us on season 2 of The Witcher.

“Hopefully I shall return to your hills, dales and fells soon. Stay strong and stay safe, my friends.”

Luckily, this won’t be the last that we see of Geralt and the rest of the gang.

Netflix renewed the fantasy series in September 2021 after it had been rumoured the streaming service was planning for the first three series ahead of the first season coming out.

With fans waiting two years for series two, it is unclear when its third outing will begin.

The Witcher season 2 will be released on Friday, December 17, on Netflix.
