The pair have had quite a journey on the BBC competition, at times being top of the leaderboard and other weeks proving to be more of a struggle. AJ and Kai have managed to secure a place in the Strictly Come Dancing final though and reflected on their journey while speaking to Express.co.uk and other media. Kai discussed the highlights of the show and his relationship with his Strictly partner, where he pointed out the “rollercoaster” of emotions.

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other media, Kai was asked about his highlights of the 2021 series.

He credited a lot of the good moments to AJ and his working relationship with her.

The dancer admitted there had been many highlights, adding: “We came out and did that jive, and it’s one of those moments where you go ‘what is happening?’

“And we progressed throughout the series, we’ve had ups and downs, we’ve had the Strictly experience.

“We’ve been top of the leaderboard and had the dance-off disaster.

“And we came out and had an amazing semi-final – that quickstep where I felt like I was dancing with a professional dancer.

“It looks like that as well, she [AJ] looks the part.

“And yeah, up until this point it’s been a rollercoaster, but I wouldn’t change it.”

The pair have been subject to speculation since early on in the series regarding their relationship.

Each week, fans have pointed out a “chemistry” between the pair, and rumours they are in a relationship have been rife – although the pair haven’t confirmed a romance.

Sadly for the couple, AJ suffered a bad injury to her foot earlier this week – just days before the 2021 final.

She explained: “Basically, I hurt the ligament in my foot and I can’t put any weight on my foot at all.

“We have not been training because I can’t stand up, and I’m doing everything I can to try and be there on Saturday night.

“It’s really frustrating because the two dances that we are repeating from the series, we’ve not performed them for weeks and weeks.

And without giving too much away, they’re energetic dances.

“So on Monday, we were like, ‘you know what, the steps are still there, we’ve just got to build up the stamina for Saturday night’.

“And then, for the show dance – the beautiful, epic snow dance – it’s one of those things that you need to practice in order to give it everything.”

She added: “So at this moment in time I’m very frustrated and upset.”

On Thursday, judge Craig Revel Horwood updated fans to say AJ has now had treatment, and “fingers crossed” will be able to perform on Saturday.

The Strictly Come Dancing final airs on Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
