The Repair Shop show first as expert given challenge she’s ‘never done before’
The Repair Shop: Kristen reveals she has never restored a bird bath
The Repair Shop saw a show first during tonight’s episode after ceramics expert Kirsten Ramsay was presented with restoring a bird bath, something she admitted she had never done.
Due to the item being so big and heavy, Kirsten and co-star Dominic Chinea were able to view it before the owner Jane walked into the barn.
Laughing, Kirsten asked: “What do you think?” to which he replied: “Oh dear, terrified, absolutely terrified! Rather you than me, look at that corner!”
Walking into the barn, Jane explained where the bird bath came from and why she had such a personal attachment to the item.
She explained: “It was originally my parents, it was in the garden of the first house that they bought when they first got married in 1958.

“It sort of moved house with them ever since and has been in my life since day one. Whenever they moved, unfortunately, Dad had the task of trying to move it and it is very heavy and wherever he put it, it was usually wrong, so my mum had him move it again.
“But it was always in pride of place where she could see it and take pleasure from it. My mum was a great lover of the birds and she used to have doves.
“I lost my mum two and a half years ago, she unfortunately lost her battle and I lost my dad last year so it has been a really difficult few years.
“When she was poorly she used to sit in the window and watch the birds feeding, she took a lot of comfort from it.

“She always promised to me to keep feeding the birds and put water in the bath because she said ‘When the birds are near so am I’ and this is why I would like to keep it going.”
Feeling the pressure, Kirsten admitted: “It is a really lovely sentiment. I haven’t ever worked on a bird bath… it has to be watertight and you have presented me with an interesting challenge.”
As Jane left, Kirsten took a closer look and expressed: “Normally the work that I do is conservation, it is reversible and with prolonged contact with water it would break the restoration down.
“Bird baths are problematic, it is going to sit with water constantly in the area that I have restored.
“It is going to be challenging and I am going to have to think outside the usual realm of my materials.”
After successfully restoring the birdbath back to its original state and confident it would last plenty more years, Jane returned to the barn.
Taking a look at the bird bath for the first time, Jane broke down crying and exclaimed: “Wow… I don’t know how you have done it, it is beautiful, thank you so much!
“My mum suffered for a lot of years but this is saying to me that all my mum’s pain and suffering is gone… I am sorry!
“It is beautiful thank you so much, it means an awful lot. It is my mum and dad’s life in here. My dad would be totally amazed how you managed to do it but mum would be blown away she really would, i can’t believe it .”
The Repair Shop airs Wednesday from 8pm on BBC One.
