The Good Doctor is back with series four, episode one airing tonight, Monday, November 2, on ABC. Dr Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore) will return along with the majority of the cast from the previous series. More than any other season though, Shaun, as well as his colleagues, will be facing some massive obstacles.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Good Doctor.

In the series three finale, Shaun and Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara) shared a passionate kiss after he tried to rescue her from a mountain of rubble caused by the earthquake.

Season four will see the former friends now in a relationship but it isn’t going exactly as they had planned.

Shaun and Lea are not seeing each other in person because he is treating covid patients and doesn’t want her to be infected.

Logically, Shaun knows this is the right thing to do but in a short clip, he opens up about his conflicting feelings of wanting to see her to Dr Alex Park (Will Yun Lee).

Meanwhile, Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) is seen asking Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas) if she is ready to move on from Neil Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez).

Melendez died at the end of series three from septic shock, moments after him and Claire declared their love for one another.

But in the trailer Claire says: “He changed me and that’s not going to go away.”

So it sounds like she’ll still be struggling with the loss, several months after Melendez’s death.

How many episodes are in The Good Doctor series 4?

As of writing this article, ABC has not announced how many episodes are going to be in season four.

Only three episodes have been posted on IMDB so far with no description written for the third instalment.

In series one and two, there were 18 episodes and then 20 in the latest season.

So it is predicted season four will be made up of roughly the same amount of episodes.

Thanks to the pandemic though, The Good Doctor was several months behind filming.

The drama usually airs in September so is a couple of months behind.

But in order to get the show out as soon as possible, the creators may have cut back on a few episodes.

Therefore, series four may be shorter than its previous seasons.

Express.co.uk will update this article when ABC announces series four’s episode count.

The first two episodes of The Good Doctor season four will be a two-part premiere focusing on the pandemic and how the surgeons cope with the influx of patients.

After the second half is shown next week, Monday, November 9, The Good Doctor will go back to some of the more everyday storylines.

Episode three is entitled Newbies which will introduce several new cast members who Shaun will end up supervising.

They will include Dr Olivia Jackson (Summer Brown), Dr Enrique Guerin (Brian Marc), Dr Jordan Allen (Bria Samoné) and Dr. Asher Wolke (Noah Galvin).

The Good Doctor season 4 starts tonight, Monday, November 2, on ABC.
