Strictly’s Nicola and Katya hailed for "dynamite" first same-sex celeb dance

Strictly Come Dancing's Nicola Adams and Katya Jones wowed the audience with the BBC show's first same-sex celeb dance.

The couple danced the Quickstep to Get Happy by Ella Fitzgerald and got a first week score of 21 with each judge awarding them 7.

Fans took to Twitter to praise Nicola and Katya who made history with their performance.

One person said: "Watching Nicola Adams on strictly has got me beaming. About bloody time."

Another wrote: "Extremely touched by Nicola Adams , and Cassia on Strictly Come Dancing , not a program I watch much, however I was impressed."

Somebody else tweeted: "Nicola Adams on #Strictly is what 2020 needed and all the gay kids up and down the country."

While someone else said: "Loving Nicola Adams & Katja in Strictly. Joyous, so, so happy performance."

After their performance presenter Tess Daly said: "It's safe to say you’re not just a boxer anymore!"

Nicola punched the air and replied: "I'm a dancer baby!"

The judges were equally impressed with Shirley Ballas hailing Katya a "genius" for the choreography.

She told the pair that it was a partnership "I’m really going to enjoy watching".

Motsi told them: "You look good. I like the way it all fitted together. You rocked it. We loved it. Keep going!"

While Craig Revel Horwood said their dance was "absolutely dynamite" and added: "I absolutely adored that routine."

In the past, the programme has featured same-sex dances from the professional dancers, however this is the first year a celeb and pro have paired-up in a same sex couple.

It was confirmed Katya and professional boxer Nicola were paired together as they were spotted leaving training earlier this month.

Talking about their pairing, a source told The Sun: "She [Katya] sees it as a chance to make history but also to redeem herself on the show after her scandal two years ago.

"She's a real girls' girl and is keen to move on from that.'

They continued: "Equally, show bosses know that Katya will have everyone talking about her and Nicola if they partner them together."

Katya previously caused a fuss on the show after being spotted kissing her dance partner, comedian Seann Walsh, during a night out.

Katya has now split from husband and fellow Strictly star Neil Jones.

It was also revealed back in August that the producers decide which celebrity will be partnered with which dancer based on height compatibility.

Nicola is 5ft4 while Katya comes in an inch higher at 5ft5, meaning they're the perfect height to dance together.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Nicola said about the decision: "It's really important, it's a big step for the show as well.

"It's nice to see we've been able to move on and I just can't wait to get some dancing done really."
