Spoilers: All we know about the Coronation Street 60th anniversary week so far

The Coronation Street 60th anniversary celebrations are now less than a month away. As we count down the days to celebrate 60 years of the longest running soap opera in the world, these next few weeks in Weatherfield are going to be setting the scene for the gamechanging week

With Oliver’s tragic illness, Geoff (Ian Bartholomew) and Yasmeen’s (Shelley King) coercive control storyline and the arrival of some new and old faces, it’s been quite the year so far, and there’s no time to stop for the locals yet, as Ray Crosby (Mark Frost) plans to destroy the cobbles next month.

As things begin to pick up pace, let’s take a look at what we know so far about the three storylines taking centre stage during the anniversary, and try to work out how they could end, and what it all means for the residents of this beloved street.

What we know so far

Ray Crosby

Sleazy businessman Ray Crosby is very much bringing the danger element to the anniversary week – he’s literally bringing bulldozers onto the street to demolish it! With his redevelopment plans firmly at the top on the list of his priorities, his team currently consists of him, Debbie (Sue Devaney) and Gary Windass (Mikey North).

Now we know Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) will discover the blueprints for the future of the cobbles soon, he has become the first person to discover what Ray is up to, and not become part of his team afterwards. This may mean Ray will be pushed to the limit in order to silence Craig, and has already tried to do so after he said he’d put in a good word with the Chief Inspector in return for Craig to keep schtum over the building plans.

So far, and perhaps quite surprisingly, Ray has only managed to gain ownership of a few properties, and is currently trying to get his hands on: Speed Daal, Geoff’s house, and with help from Debbie, it’s looking like Sally (Sally Dynevor) could sell her house in order to get away from Geoff.

Ray and Debbie have still got a long way to go before they can even think about going public with their plans.

Yasmeen Nazir

Bringing the emotional element to the celebration week is Yasmeen and her trial. For months we have watched her endure prison and soon we will finally discover whether she will be set free, or spend life behind bars. We have been desperate to discover Elaine’s (Paula Wilcox) whereabouts after Geoff scared her off a few months ago, but finding her has been incredibly difficult. Time is running out for Yasmeen, and as much as it pains us to admit, Elaine’s fragility may possibly leave her too frightened to attend court and defend Yasmeen.

Recently, Alya (Sair Khan) discovered Yasmeen’s money problems due to Geoff gaining control of her bank accounts, and with Imran’s (Charlie De Melo) legal fees growing, managing to sell Speed Daal would certainly help Alya and Yasmeen, but so far getting Geoff on side (obviously) hasn’t been easy.

But with Geoff exiting this year also, the trial will no doubt have an overall impact on how his departure will play out. Given the fact that both Sally and Tim (Joe Duttine) want Geoff gone, the aftermath of Yasmeen’s trial outcome has the potential to be huge.

The secret involving two people

There’s not a great deal of information surrounding this storyline, but what we do know is that two people are set to keep a shameful secret that will ruin their lives and those around them. Secrets never stay secret for long in Coronation Street, but right now, this secret could be kept by anyone! There’s been some recent secret keeping with Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) when it came to keeping quiet about Abi (Sally Carman) suggesting they should sleep together, and he gave into his alcohol temptations recently – perhaps Peter and Abi are the two set to keep a dark secret from everyone?

Also, on the street, Asha (Tanisha Gorey) has been at the centre of some teenage drama, hiding the fact that she’s in a relationship with Corey (Maximus Evans) from Dev (Jimmi Harkishin). Add this to Corrie boss Iain MacLeod confirming a storyline for 2021 involving the teenagers of Weatherfield, it’s highly likely the secret could be the catalyst for this dark and life changing situation to begin.

How things could end

There are so many possibilities on how each of these storylines will conclude. We’ve already spoken about the prospect that Faye Windass (Ellie Leach) may be in trouble next month as she continues to work for Ray, but if his plan goes ahead and he damages the majority of the street, more than one person might find themselves in a life threatening situation (probably best to wrap Rita (Barbara Knox) and Ken (William Roche) in bubble wrap now for protection).

When it comes to Yasmeen’s trial, there really are only two ways in which it will end: she’s free from prison, or spends life behind bars for trying to murder Geoff. Right now, luck isn’t on Yasmeen’s side – Elaine is still missing, and with no one knowing where she is, she could either surprise us all and turn up to help Yasmeen, or that scene with Geoff really was the last we’d ever see of her. The week of the trial will change so much for Yasmeen, and with no glimmer of hope currently in sight, she needs a miracle to happen to allow her to return to the cobbles.

Properties

Without the properties and homes in Weatherfield, there would be no Weatherfield! And with Ray hell bent on destroying the cobbles, how many businesses he gets his hands on in the coming weeks could determine just how things end in the conclusion of the anniversary week. Ray still needs to get his hands on several homes and businesses, including: Speed Daal, Geoff’s house, the Kabin and Dev’s shop. It begs the question of how many properties will Ray end up owning and get flattened? Can the residents stop Ray in time before the bulldozers arrive and their homes are destroyed?

Residents

At the heart of any drama in Coronation Street are the residents. Any dangerous situation they find themselves in they all pull together, and add this to the fact that we don’t think the residents will just give in and let Ray wreck their homes, we’re expecting some impressive scenes as they all join together to challenge the dodgy businessman.

So how far will things go next month? With Gary currently working for Ray, choosing to help him or not could be the difference for him in continuing to bury his dark past, or allow more residents to discover what he’s really like. If our suspicions are correct and Faye does find herself in peril soon, it will make Gary’s choice impact him hugely if it means putting his sister in jeopardy.

Now Craig has discovered the blueprints for the redevelopment, and with Abi’s suspicions growing about what Debbie’s really doing, things are picking up pace and cracks are starting to show for Ray. The destroying of the street, Yasmeen’s trial, and the secret amongst two locals will all lay the foundations for a massive aftermath, and we can’t wait to see how it will all play out.
