Sad story behind Roy Cropper's shopping bag as he leaves Coronation Street
Roy Cropper’s iconic shopping bag is perhaps as famous as the legend himself, given that he carried it with him at all times when strolling the cobbles of Coronation Street.
The bag, however, was actually brought into the show by actor David Neilson, who once explained that it belonged to his mother.
‘My mum sadly passed away just before I started on the show and I wanted to carry something of hers,’ said the soap star.
‘I also wanted to add my own props and develop the character. The bag carries nothing more than my script.’
Roy left the cobbles in heartbreaking scenes on Wednesday (November 24), after signing over all of his estate to Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher).
The legend’s departure came about in the wake of him discovering that the gun Abi Franklin (Sally Carman) obtained to shoot Corey Brent (Maximus Evans) was the very same firearm used to kill Natasha Blakeman (Rachel Leskovac).
DS Abney informed him about the connection between the two investigations, and – in spite of him covering for Abi once more – Roy revealed that he is unable to stay put on the street given that he feels responsible for Natasha’s death.
‘This is my only hope of peace,’ he told Nina, explaining why he must go. ‘[To] go away and atone for what I’ve done.’
Nina, in tears, begged Roy one last time to stay. ‘Please don’t do this to me Roy!,’ she exclaimed. ‘You’re the one person in the world who I trust, and I love you!’
But Roy refused to reconsider.
Afterwards, he exited his beloved cafe and took one final look at the eponymous street.
