Ronan Keating praises ‘Bowel Babe’ Deborah James amid ‘heart-breaking’ cancer battle

Ronan Keating said it has been “heart-breaking” to watch Deborah James’ struggle with bowel cancer.

The former headteacher was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016 and announced on Instagram on 9 May that she has now stopped treatment and is receiving hospice care at home.

The Boyzone singer became a cancer charity campaigner after his Mum, Marie, died of breast cancer and he has now received an honorary doctorate from the Open University for his charity work.

The 45 year old explained: “I continue the story and continue to educate people about cancer, whether that’s through cancer research UK or through the Marie Keating Foundation or through the Open University degree, the doctorate.”

Ronan then touched on how “heart-breaking” the past few weeks have been as Deborah, also known online as ‘BowelBabe’.

He continued: “It’s just so important, what we’ve seen with BowelBabe in the last few weeks, bless her.

“What she’s going through and has gone through during the last five years, it’s just been, it’s heart-breaking. Her message too is about education and people understanding the disease because early detection is your best chance of survival.”

Deborah, 40, took to Instagram to share that she was receiving end of life care now and launched her legacy, BowelBabe Fund earlier this month.

The You, Me and the Big C podcaster set out to raise £250,000 for charities including Cancer Research UK and Bowel Cancer, and in just 24 hours she raised £1 million.

After five days, that total surpassed £5 million and is currently over £6 million and rising.

Since Deborah was diagnosed with bowel cancer, she has been raising awareness of the symptoms and realities of living with cancer and taken part in several charity events such as the Vitality 10k run.

For her tireless charity work throughout her illness, Deborah was awarded a Damehood and Prince William personally delivered it to her home in Cambridgeshire.

Deborah said she was “utterly honoured” to receive the royal to her home as she shared photos to Instagram and wrote: “Prince William actually came to our family house today!! I am utterly honoured that he joined us for afternoon tea and champagne, where he not only spent a generous amount of time talking to my whole family but also honoured me with my Damehood.

"It’s quite surreal having a royal pop in at home, and yes you can imagine the cleaning antics and preparation went off the scale – but it was all irrelevant because William was so kind and he put us all at ease.”

Deborah has also announced that her new book, How to Live When you could be dead, will be released in August and she is “gutted” that she won’t be alive to see it published.
