Reiss makes insensitive mistake in EastEnders as he discovers Sonia is bisexual

Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) well and truly put his foot in it in EastEnders after finding out that Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) is bisexual, making some incredibly biphobic assumptions and statements.

The discovery came shortly after Sonia suggested that he invite Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters) over for dinner, given that they were going to be working together.

Sharon, as viewers will recall, asked Reiss to step in and sort the accounts at the Arches now that Keanu has taken over as manager, and Sonia reckoned it would be best to break the ice and get to know the couple better.

The dinner party, however, proved tough for Reiss, who was worried that he and Keanu wouldn’t get along, and therefore he went out of his way to research football, hoping it would give them something to talk about.

But things went from bad to worse over dinner, after Keanu revealed that he thought Sonia and Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White) would get married.

Reiss was taken aback by the discovery that Sonia was bisexual, and made things worse with some insensitive comments, suggesting that men don’t have the option to ‘dip in and dip out’ like women do.

‘If Dave is on the straight train and he gets off at Todger town for a mini break, he’s known as Gay Dave for the rest of his life,’ said the accountant, much to Sonia’s horror.

‘If a woman is on the straight train, let’s call her Tonia, she can get off at Lesbi Avenue and stay as long as she wants and then gets back on the train and meets a man – and brings it up at dinner parties like it was a gap year.’

Sonia was horrified by his comments, branding them biphobic, before storming out.

Keanu and Sharon did some damage control, offering the couple advice, with Reiss subsequently apologising for what he said, revealing that he didn’t actually mean any of it, adding that he’s just worried because Sonia has had such a ‘wild’ love life and he worried he’s not enough for her.

Sonia was quick to dispel his worries, telling him that he is enough, with the couple sharing a kiss.
