Paul set up for Rufus' murder in Corrie as he is caught by police
Paul Foreman’s (Peter Ash) money troubles on Coronation Street recently led him to go in for a spot of car theft. Unfortunately for him, the car he chose to steal belonged to Rufus (Steven Meo) – who was soon after that found dead in his swimming pool.
Viewers are aware that Rufus’s killer was multiple murderer Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce), but as far as the police are concerned their investigations are very much open – and of course whoever stole the expensive car is a massive suspect as this could be a motive for the killing.
In Monday (April 24)’s episode, after reading the Weatherfield Gazette’s headline ‘Pool body latest: police search for missing car,’ Damon (Ciarán Griffiths) realised that the car meant trouble and ordered Paul to get rid of it.
Paul set off in the vehicle, but because of the effects of his motor neurone disease he lost control and swerved, and was soon approached by the police. Paul was asked if he was the registered owner of the car an of course he isn’t, and he soon found himself in the police station.
That’s where things got really bad for him. As he answered ‘no comment’ to the police’s questions he realised that as well as being in trouble for stealing the car he was now also in the frame for Rufus’ killing.
‘Did you kill him for his car or was the car just a bonus?’ the officer asked him. He was forced to admit to stealing the car, but said he’d just taken the keys while Rufus’ back was turned.
At that point the duty solicitor arrived and turned out to be none other than Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown). When they were alone Paul told her he’d taken the car because he ‘needed the dollars.’ Dee-Dee said his admission about taking the car would mean he’d be looking at a custodial sentence.
‘So what?’ he said. ‘I’m already looking at a life sentence.’ He explained about the symptoms he’s been experiencing and that the following day he had an appointment where he’d find out whether he has MND.
A shocked Dee-Dee said this could be mitigation and would help his case, but Paul insisted that he didn’t want anyone to know about the MND.
‘Billy (Daniel Brocklebank)’ll go into a spin, and Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell)’s got the wedding coming up and she doesn’t need that extra aggro. Not until it’s definite that I’m a goner, anyway.’
Dee-Dee still wanted to persuade him but was interrupted by the police officer coming back, which brought an end to her conversation with Paul.
If Dee-Dee can’t persuade Paul to change his mind, is he going to go to jail for Rufus’s murder because he won’t reveal the truth about his illness?
Coronation Street continues Wednesday April 26 at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
