Paddy McGuinness and Question of Sport team captains Sam Quek and Ugo Monye welcomed four famous faces from the world of sport onto the BBC show on Friday evening to put their knowledge to the test. Joining Ugo was tennis pro Johanna Konta and cricketing legend Ryan Sidebottom while Sam was joined by rugby star Ellis Genge and track and field athlete, Holly Bradshaw. As the quizzing commenced, however, it didn’t take long for Paddy to burst into hysterics, wiping away tears following one of Ellis’ answers.
The moment came as Paddy introduced a round based on geography in which the two team captain with the help of their guests would have to locate on a giant map the answers to Paddy’s brainteasers.
To make things difficult, a line would appear after each question on the map, and Ugo and Sam had to correctly identify the section of the now-divided map the correct country was in.
This week, the Question of Sport stars were given a map of Europe to work with and Sam had plenty of work to do to catch up to Ugo’s team’s early lead.
Sam and her team got off to a good start as they correctly identified France as the most successful European country in the history of pole vault.
The second question revolved around rugby – Ellis’ specialist subject – although the wheels soon came off when he gave a rather embarrassing answer.
“Stand in the area where you would find the country that New Zealand beat 108-13 at the 2007 Rugby World Cup…” Paddy quizzed.
Quick as a flash, Ellis confidently piped up: “Canada, Canada.”
But just as quick, rival team captain and fellow rugby pro Ugo Monye highlighted his error: “In Europe, yeah?”
Laughter erupted in the studio as it suddenly dawned on Ellis his mistake and Paddy began holding his head in his hands.
The Leicester Tigers star saw the funny side of the ordeal before answering Romania as his other option, which also got the giggles going.
Prior to Sam’s turn, Ugo and his team had gone back and forth on whether Romania was the correct answer to one of their teasers – and the repetition of the Eastern European country prompted laughter once more.
But despite it already being an answer to a previous question, Ellis wasn’t letting Romania go, continually telling Sam it was the correct answer.

However, Ellis was incorrect as Portugal was the right answer but the laughter didn’t stop there as he commented afterwards: “C’est la vie.”
“C’est la vie? That’s French,” Ugo quickly interjected with Paddy by this point in hysterics.
“Oh, my word,” the Top Gear star said as he wiped tears from his face but the round still wasn’t over.
“I don’t know if I can take it,” Paddy joked as he tried to regain his composure and give Sam and her team their final question.

In the end, Sam, Ellis and Holly lost to Ugo, Ryan and Johanna in a rather emphatic fashion.
Sam’s team scored 11 while Ugo and his team racked up a score of 23.
But the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly Ellis’ antics as Paddy commented at the end: “That’s one of my favourite ever episodes.
“Ellis, you’re always welcome back my friend,” the host added.
Question of Sport continues Friday at 7:35pm on BBC One.
