Ozark season 3: Will Ruth Langmore kill Wendy Byrde to become new kingpin?

Netflix has yet to share a release date for Ozark season three but it’s likely to be in 2020 after star Julia Garner confirmed she was filming on the new series. The last run premiered back in 2018 and saw the Byrdes getting deeper in with the Mexican cartel and the world of organised crime. Despite Marty Byrde’s (played by Jason Bateman) hopes of escaping the mafia, he was overruled by his wife Wendy (Laura Linney).

Wendy made a deal with the cartel’s lawyer Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer) behind Marty’s back in the hopes of saving her family.

Marty was making plans to help the family escape to Australia’s Gold Coast but these were put on ice at the last minute.

Instead, Marty seemed to be sidelined and Wendy was the one pulling the strings with the help of her young son Jonah (Skylar Gaertner).

Marty was left in shock by Wendy going behind his back once again and making a pact with the devil that he was hoping to avoid.

Helen warned Wendy that when she crossed this line and betrayed Marty, even fibre of her being would be changed forever.

Wendy realised she was going into dangerous and illicit territory with the cartel but went ahead regardless.

But Wendy’s machinations didn’t end there, she also had Cade Langmore (Trevor Long) dealt with after he killed FBI agent Roy Petty (Jason Butler Harner) and was threatening to go to the police.

During a meeting between Cade and Wendy, she promised him a tidy sum of cash if he left town forever.

Cade duly obliged but it wasn’t enough for Wendy, who had organised a hit on him.

His daughter Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner), who is one of Marty’s lieutenant, was non-the-wiser about the circumstances surrounding her father’s ill-timed demise.

However, season three is highly likely to tackle this head-on given it’s such an important secret and could change the course of the show.

When Ruth does find out, she could want to take revenge on Wendy and Marty which could see her killing them both.

On top of that, Ruth could become the kingpin with star Julia telling Gold Derby in a recent interview: “I think for season three, it’s mainly about how she is trying to go back with just herself.

“For such a long time, she was alone and by herself for so many years and not dependent on anybody. And then Marty came in, she kind of became dependent on him in a weird way, her dad came in, she became dependent on him. She’s dependent on Wyatt but in a different way.

She continued: “So I think this season, she’s trying to depend on herself more and I think she’s in full work mode.

“When I’m saying full work mode, the thing with Ruth is as soon as a problem hits her and it’s something that can shake up anybody, she doesn’t let it sit.

“She’s just gonna be like, ‘Okay, I’m going back to work. I’ll talk about it later’.”

Reflecting on Ruth’s reaction to Cade’s passing, Julia explained: “She’s very much like that, so the fact that her dad died, she’s like, ‘I’ll deal with it later’. And then it bottles up.

“I think that’s a big thing for next season. Then there’s some new things but I can’t give that away.”

Julia’s words suggest that the ripples of Cade’s death are going to have a huge impact going forward and could result in some deaths.

Star and director Jason also seemed to tease his own demise when he tweeted last year: “I’m happy for me, but concerned for Marty – it’s official OZARK 3 is on its way.”

So the future isn’t looking bright for either Marty or Wendy.
