Our Yorkshire Farm's Amanda Owen defends 'breeding her own staff' after backlash for putting her nine kids to work
OUR Yorkshire Farm's Amanda Owen has defended 'breeding her own staff' after backlash for putting her kids to work.
The 46-year-old shepherdess has nine children with husband Clive, 66, and the couple insist on their brood helping out around the farm.
This has been met by some backlash from viewers, but Amanda defended her family, saying on the Channel 5 show: "We all have to work together as a family. I really don't feel that's a bad lesson.
"This is what needs to happen and we all need to do it."
She continued: "I don't feel like that's sort of breeding your own workforce because it's not that.
"It's a fact of being involved and have that responsibility and being part of something. I think that's a good thing."
Clive agreed with his wife, explaining how the children could see their parents' passion for farming and wanted to be part of it too.
He said: "I've always thought when we've been working, the kids like to be part of something.
"It's lovely when they are around to help and they help willingly. I miss them when they're at school. When they're at home it makes a difference definitely."
Amanda has also defended her 'no nonsense' approach to parenting, telling Radio Times: "There’s no room for nonsense and whingeing is not tolerated”.
She continued: "The snowflake generation, they can't do anything.
“They don't know anything about how to look after themselves, or a work ethic, all of that has gone out of the window."
But she added: "It's our fault as parents. If you put your child on a pedestal, with no sense of independence, and think you have got to entertain them the whole time, what can you expect?"
Our Yorkshire Farm airs on Channel 5 on Tuesday's at 9pm.
