Matthew Wolfenden shares loving picture with 'mini-me' son as he quits Emmerdale
Emmerdale fans are still reeling following reports that star Matthew Wolfenden has quit his role after 17 years.
The actor, who portrays David Metcalfe, has been at the centre of some of the ITV soap’s biggest storylines over the past two decades, though has featured significantly less in recent months.
In fact, it’s believed that the 43-year-old star is departing the TV soap due to a lack of ‘gritty’ storylines.
‘Matthew has had an amazing time on the soap, but feels ready for a change,’ revealed a source. ‘He hasn’t been getting any gritty storylines recently so wants to see what else is out there.’
Fans have been processing the news since it broke on Saturday (August 19). Matthew, meanwhile, has yet to comment on or confirm his departure, with his latest social media post having been from 5 weeks ago.
The snap, which he shared on Instagram, saw him pose with son Bowie, 7.
‘Mini me’, wrote the Emmerdale star, before adding a heart emoji to finish off the touching post.
It is currently unknown as to how or why David will leave Emmerdale, though The Sun’s source commented that the character could be killed off.
‘He’s only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit,’ the said.
‘It’s possible David could be killed off.’
One of David’s biggest storyline saw the character battle testicular cancer.
In 2019, he discovered that girlfriend Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein) had groomed his son Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant).
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
