Shamima Begum appeared on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday morning, speaking from a camp in Syria. She begged the British public for forgiveness for joining terrorist group ISIS when she was 15 years old. Later on Loose Women, Jane Moore, Judi Love, Janet Street-Porter, and Kelle Bryan, discussed the TV appearance made by the now 22-year-old Shamima. However, ITV viewers quickly hit out at the panelists, with some accusing them of being “naive” for having sympathy.
Leading the discussion on Loose Women, Jane said: “Some will have even more extreme views which is that she, you know, made her bed and she needs to lie in it.
“But, Janet, where are you on this?” she asked.
Janet replied: “I think, and I’ve said it all along, that she was a child when she left Britain.
“She was a child when she married and she married someone who was chosen for her and she has lost three children in relatively quick succession.
“She was groomed by ISIS and if a child is groomed you have to, I think you have to understand the pressures that were on here.
“I’m not asking for sympathy for her now, but I can find it in my heart to forgive her,” she revealed.
The Loose Women star went on to concede: “I can see that bringing her back to England poses all sorts of problems.
“But, I think that in the end we ought to be able to use her experiences to show other young people what her experiences have done to her both mentally, how they shaped her life, and the journey that she’s been on,” Janet explained.
However, many viewers weren’t impressed with Janet’s comments and took to Twitter to complain.
“Give it a rest Janet, I’ve never thought of you as being naive #LooseWomen,” @Beckie_Miller_ wrote.
@KeefBurtons agreed adding: “Begum saying she’s ‘happy to come back’ She’ll be the only f***ing one that would be happy, well apart from Janet who will be meeting her at the airport #LooseWomen.”
“Janet think about those families whose fathers brothers uncles have been murdered #LooseWomen,” @Mancunian_Manx posted.
“Fgs Janet wake up! She’s lost her British citizenship for a reason! To much time spent on this subject! #LooseWomen,” @ChantelO26 said.
However, there were some viewers who agreed with Janet and praised her for her honesty on the programme.
“I have always admired Janet Street-Porter.She is one of the original #icons of cool #LooseWomen,” @HugoSlime wrote.
“Well said Janet & Judy #LooseWomen,” @gossalot added.
Earlier in the day on Good Morning Britain, Shamima had been questioned about her experience and how she feels now.
“I am asking the British people to forgive me because I made a mistake at a very young age,” she said.
“Most young people don’t know what they want to do with their lives and they are very confused and can easily fall into things like this.
“I know it is very hard for the British to try and forgive me because they have lived in fear of ISIS and have lost loved ones because of ISIS but I have also lived in fear of ISIS and I have also lost loved ones because of ISIS,” Shamima explained.
