ITV back Laura Whitmore for new Love Island series amid replacement rumours

ITV has backed Laura Whitmore to remain at the helm of Love Island despite a 'lukewarm' reception from fans.

It comes after a source claimed to The Sun that producers were eyeing up Maura Higgins or Maya Jama to take over Laura’s role for the new summer season.

A source told the publication: "Producers are keen to keep the show fresh and are keeping their options open.

"They have been impressed with both Maya and Maura, and think either could bring the necessary pizzazz and sexiness to the role."

The source added: "They want someone who is fun and can connect with people", adding that as Maura had seen villa life from the inside, it would be easy for her to "relate" to contestants.

They added that "plenty of people" are "hungry for the role", and added that job contracts are annual and renegotiated ahead of each series of Love Island.

However, ITV have denied the claims, telling Daily Star Online: "This is untrue.

"Laura has done a fantastic job at the helm of the show this year and no discussions have yet taken place with regards to the next series."

  • Caroline Flack's mum 'can't watch Laura Whitmore in same dress, same pose as daughter'

It comes shortly after the mum of late presenter Caroline Flack told The Sun that she found it “horrible” to see Laura in the same poses and outfits as her daughter, who passed away last year.

"I haven’t watched Love Island since she died," she confessed.

"I watched Love Island because Carrie was in it. Now, it’s horrible when the advert comes up and the girl that’s taken her place is all in almost the same dress, in almost the same pose."

She added: "I think ITV2 could have done it a little differently. They could have done it out of respect. It’s all very well putting these films on saying, ‘Oh we love Carrie blah blah blah’. But you know, just have a little bit of respect."

Laura received a rather mixed reaction from fans this year, with many taking to social media to suggest she should be replaced.

Daily Star TV columnist Ed Gleave tweeted: "Laura Whitmore skirted over the Faye drama just there. No one expected Paxman. But that was feeble. Her interview style is poor #LoveIsland."

Someone else tweeted: "Sorry but I just can’t get on board with Laura Whitmore can we get someone else next year I vote Rylan!"

Another viewer even suggested replacing Laura with Chloe Burrows’ mum, after she and Chloe’s sister made such a huge impression during the meet the parents challenge.

"Can we replace Laura Whitmore with Chloe’s mum omg nah she’s the main character!" someone cheekily tweeted.
