Here's how The Conners spin-off writes out Roseanne Barr's character after her firing

Warning: This article contains spoilers from the season premiere of The Conners, ‘Keep on Trucking’.

Following The Conners’ debut, we finally know how Roseanne Barr’s character Roseanne dies – and, yep, you already know.

Last month, Barr seemingly revealed how her character dies in the Roseanne spin-off, telling Brandon Straka on his YouTube show: “Oh yeah, they killed her. They have her die of an opioid overdose.

“There’s nothing I can do about it. It’s done. It’s over.”

She was right, of course, it is over, Roseanne Conner is dead, and it’s all down to an opiate OD. The spin-off picks up three weeks after Roseanne’s death.

As her family members struggle to move on, the episode soon reveals that Roseanne didn’t die of a heart attack, as they originally believed.

Instead, she met her maker after an accidental opioid overdose – the bottle of pills discovered by Dan (John Goodman).

The name on the prescription, however, does not belong to Roseanne. The pills are property of Marcy, played by a surprise guest star, the glorious Mary Steenburgen.

When she turns up, she tells Dan in tears that she and Roseanne were part of a group of neighbours who tried to help each other out when prescriptions were too expensive for them to afford.

“I would never have given them to her if I knew she had a problem,” Marcy said, because she “know[s] what it’s like to have that problem”.

And here was how Roseanne reacted to her character being written out.

Despite the critical and commercial success of the Roseanne reboot, ABC cancelled the show following a racially offensive tweet by its title star about former Obama administration official Valerie Jarrett.

The Conners airs on ABC on Tuesdays at 8/7c in the US.
