Robert Peston told ITV’s Good Morning Britain that Boris Johnson will remain leader of the Conservative Party as long as he maintains his large lead over Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour Party in the polls. The UK’s Prime Minister is facing fresh scrutiny after it was reported he said “let the bodies pile high” rather than introducing another lockdown.

GMB’s Adil Ray asked: “Do you think his future is in real question now despite what the polls are telling us?”

Mr Peston replied: “You have mentioned that important point, what happens in elections, what happens in the polls.

“We have got important local elections, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Ireland elections coming up very soon.

“The important point is that the Tory Party will tolerate chaos if the Prime Minister and the Tory Party continue to have a big lead over the Labour Party in the polls.

“The moment that narrows, the moment in the eyes of the Tory Party Boris Johnson turns from looking like an asset into a liability, he is toast.

“The Tory Party is ruthless in that sense.”
