Fans have been eagerly awaiting the upcoming season of ABC’s long-running medical drama to find out the fate of their favourite characters. Thankfully, actor Richard Flood who played Cormac Hayes dropped a huge hint about his character’s relationship with Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo) on season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy.
In an interview with TVLine.com, Richard was asked about Cormac’s blossoming relationship with Meredith and where it stood in the new season.
To which he responded: “I suppose at the start of this season, there will be references to stuff that has happened off-camera, then you’ll see where it goes from there.”
When asked if the series would fast-forward and fill viewers in with flashbacks, the actor laughed and replied: “Maybe something like that. Have I been vague enough for you?”
Cormac Hayes (played by Richard Flood) was a somewhat new character who joined Grey Sloan Hospital in season 16’s mid-season finale.
He had gained previous medical experience during his time in Switzerland and was able to secure his role as Head of Paediatric Surgery thanks to fan favourite Christina Yang (Sandra Oh).
As the series progressed Cormac and Meredith got romantically involved, despite butting heads the first few times they met.
They both had professional disagreements about how to handle a patient’s diagnosis on the first case they worked together.
However, by their second patient, they were able to sort things out and eventually become friends.
Meredith later agreed to be taken on a date by Cormac, however, they had to settle for drinks in his office after Covid-19 hit Seattle.
Their proper date was put on hold after Meredith contracted Coronavirus after working in the Covid ICU and was admitted after collapsing in the parking lot.
It was during this time, she was dreaming about being on a beach and reuniting with dead loved ones.
This included her husband Derek Sheperd (Patrick Dempsey), throughout the episode, she would wake up, talk to her colleagues about treatment then pass out again where she would return to the beach.
The third time she went unconscious, Meredith was reunited with her friend George O’Malley (T.R Knight), whom she had started her medical career alongside.
After escaping death yet again, for another countless time, she was able to recover from Covid-19.
With Cormac by her side and happy to see her doing better, the two shared a bottle of whisky in the attending lounge on Christmas Eve.
Speaking on his character’s feelings for Meredith, Richard added: “I think his feelings are evident for everybody to see.”
He explained: “But in many ways, he’s quite Irish, he’s a reserved kind of character who wouldn’t be effusive with his feelings.
“But I think it’s clear even in what he doesn’t say more than what he does say how he feels.”
Cormac’s relationship with Meredith was the first he entered after his wife passed away from cancer.
Thankfully, Grey Anatomy’s return is right around the corner, so fans will get to see how or if this budding romance will flourish.
