Gemma Atkinson admits Gorka Marquez found leaving daughter Mia for Strictly Tour ‘tough’

Gemma Atkinson has opened up about how “upset” Gorka Marquez was as he returned to work only days after his daughter was born.

The former Emmerdale actress and her fiancé, who is best known as a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing, welcomed their first child together, Mia, in 2019.

Appearing on Lorraine, the 36 year old opened up to Christine Lampard, who filled in for Lorraine Kelly on Monday's show, about how tough the first few days of parenthood were for her.

She admitted she had some feelings of “jealousy” as Gorka returned to his life as though “nothing’s changed for him” but she was left at home to look after their child.

Gemma explained: "He had to go on tour when she was three days old and again, he got grief for it as people said ‘who choses work over the child?’ but he was contractually obliged to go and it wasn’t just his show it was the production that he’d be letting down.

“And obviously he has to keep the socials going for the show and get the tickets sold and I was looking at all the stuff online at him and Giovanni and Aljaz.

“And I was sat at home with the stitches, Mia crying, a nurse coming round to change the dressing and I was like: 'This is my life now and nothing’s changed for him'.”

Despite how things appeared online it turns out Gorka was “really upset” about being separated from his family at such a special time.

It was Giovanni Pernice who got in touch with Gemma to make her aware of how much he was struggling on the tour.

She continued: “But then during the tour it was Gio, Giovanni text me and said, 'Gorka’s not been himself, just letting you know'.

"And I FaceTimed him and they were all out one night – all the lads – and he was in the hotel on his own.

“He just got really upset and just said: ‘I don’t want to be here I want to be at home with you and the baby’.”

Gemma admitted she then realised how “tough” it was for Gorka who had to return to work as much as it is for new Mum’s at home with the new born.

Gemma added: “It dawned on me that it’s just as tough for the partner who goes back to work as the partner who is stuck at home you sort of resent each other’s situations.”

This year Gorka turned down going on the Strictly tour to stay at home with his family. The couple met when Gemma joined the dance talent show in 2017 as she was paired with Aljaž Škorjanec.

A few years later the couple got engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2021, and now the couple lives in their “dream home” in Manchester with the daughter, Mia and their dogs.
