GB News, which has been live since June, has had a turbulent start to TV and has struggled to compete with rivals. Just months after its anticipated launch, founder Andrew Neil decided to quit his role, and last week it was announced broadcaster Simon McCoy would be leaving. Now, the channel has employed conservative political commentator and activist Darren Grimes.
This Morning’s Eamonn Holmes also announced he would be joining GB News just hours before it was reported Simon had quit.
It later emerged that he would be replacing the former BBC star.
Following a weak start and numerous reports of low ratings, it seems the channel is undergoing a shake-up.
Eamonn, 62, announced he would be leaving the ITV show after he and wife Ruth Langsford’s roles on the programme were scaled back.
Darren, 28, has regularly appeared on GB News to give his view on debates.
GB News’ official Twitter page announced the latest edition, sharing: “Broadcaster and political commentator @darrengrimes_ will host a new show on GB News, Real Britain with Darren Grimes, at 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays from next month. Welcome, Darren!”
Twitter user Ian wrote: “Well done and a great addition to your line up.”
PiperIan commented: “Despite the haters on here, I welcome this announcement. For a young man, he certainly talks a lot of sense. Well done.”
Mark_thedrummer shared: “GB News attempts to break record by recording negative viewing figures.
“Having previously recorded no people watching, the channel went a step further and recruited Darren Grimes in an attempt to have negative viewing figures.”
Barry Glen remarked he would be “out of his depth”.
It comes as Eamonn Holmes confirmed speculation that he would be joining GB News after 15 years on This Morning on Friday.
Holmes is set to be taking on a new morning segment that will attempt to rival BBC Breakfast.
A spokesperson from GB News told Express.co.uk: “[Simon] is being replaced by Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster and we’re thrilled about this.
“Eamonn and Isabel, who hosted Sunrise together for a few years, are good friends with a lovely, warm rapport. They will host a new longer-form breakfast show (3.5 hours, 6am-9.30am) to coincide with our radio launch in the new year.
“We’ve had great success in building our evening audiences so now we’re now turning our attention to breakfast to emulate that success.
“The changes in the New Year are part of a raft of exciting developments we’re planning for 2022.”
GB News CEO Angelos Frangopoulos told Metro: “Simon is an outstanding broadcaster and we’re sorry to see him go.
“We remain open to ways we can work with him in future.”
GB News is available to watch on Freeview Channel 236, Freesat Channel 216, Sky Channel 515 and Virgin Media Channel 626.
