Someone just asked Freddie Flintoff – a former international cricket extraordinaire – if he was a ‘fan’ of cricket. How’s you’re day going?

Flintoff – who was consistently rated one of the top international all-rounders in both ODI and Test cricket – was hosting Top Gear when the awkward blunder was made.

The sports star-turned presenter was left red-faced when asked: ‘Are you a fan of cricket?,’ leaving him no choice but to giggle.

He was then asked what team he supports, to which he answered: ‘Chennai Super Kings,’ a franchise cricket team based in India.

The fan was buzzing and fist pumped the air, referring to Flintoff as ‘my guy.’

His happiness quickly turned to surprise, though, when Flintoff asked if he was ‘a big fan.’

When the fan confirmed that he was, Flintoff revealed that he once played for Chennai Super Kings.

‘Really?’ replied the cricket fan, with a wide-eyed expression, before asking what year.

‘2008,’ replied Flintoff, with the fan quickly jumping to defend himself, saying: ‘I mean, I was a baby at the time so I didn’t watch cricket back then.’

The host struggled to hide the surprise and humiliation on his face, as he undoubtedly started to feel old.

Naturally, viewers thought the fan’s innocent question was hilarious, taking to Twitter to share their bewilderment.

‘How can you not know who Andrew Flintoff is?’ one said.

‘This is something I would do, but on purpose,’ joked another.

Another tweeted: ‘Genuinely couldn’t stop laughing when watching this earlier.’

Flintoff was one of cricket’s leading all rounders, a fast bowler, middle order batsman and slip fielder.

He debuted in 1998 and retired from professional cricket officially in 2009, at the end of the Ashes Series.

He now enjoys a successful television career, and has been involved with numerous projects.

He designed his own fashion range and became the face of the brand Jacamo, and won the first series of the Australian version of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!

Flintoff is also a fan favourite on Sky One’s A League of Their Own and joined BBC Two’s Top Gear in 2019.

Top Gear airs on Sundays at 8pm on BBC One.
