Fox's Bret Baier and Family Are 'Banged Up, but Alive' After 'Major Car Crash' on Icy Road

Fox News’ Bret Baier and his family are doing okay — “banged up, but alive” — after they were involved in a serious car wreck Monday on icy Montana roads, PEOPLE confirms.

In a statement, Baier, 48, credited the quick work of a kind passerby and first responders for jumping to the aid of him, his wife of 14 years and their two young sons. They were taken to the hospital but have been released.

The family of four had been skiing this past weekend and were heading to the airport when the crash occurred, Baier said.

“After a weekend of skiing with my wife and two boys in Montana, driving to the airport Monday morning on icy roads, we were involved in a major car crash,” the Special Report anchor explained in his statement to PEOPLE.

“Thanks to a man driving by named Zach who stopped and helped, we were able to climb out of the flipped car,” Baier said. “And thanks to the first responders and Montana Highway Patrol — we made it to the hospital quickly.”

“We are very grateful to all of those who helped us out,” he said.

On Monday afternoon, not long after the crash, Baier tweeted: “Don’t take anything for granted – every day is a blessing – and family is everything. It’s always good to remind yourself of that – before something does it for you.”

He added the hashtag #countyourblessings.

Stephen Colbert said on his late-night show Monday that Baier had been set to be a guest the following night, according to Mediaite. He described the collision in stark language, saying “jaws of life” were needed to get Baier out of his vehicle.

“They were all in the hospital but they’re going to be okay. And we just want to say: We hope you’re doing better,” Colbert said.

The Late Show host continued: “Bret’s message to everyone out there, is: They’re going to be okay, thank you for your thoughts and prayers for him and his family and, please, wear your seatbelt. It makes a difference.”

Baier has two sons: Paul, 11, and 8-year-old Daniel. He and wife Amy wed in October 2004.
