‘Everybody Knows’ Asi Asi In Debut, Oscar Shorts Score $912K – Specialty Box Office

UPDATED with more info: Focus Features bowed Everybody Knows laid claim to the highest per-screen average of the weekend at the specialty box office. The Cannes-opening film directed by Oscar-winning Iranian helmer Asghar Farhadi and starring Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem bowed in four locations, grossing $75,000 for an $18,743 average.

The frame’s biggest opening-weekend grosser was the 2019 Oscar Nominated Shorts, this year’s pack of Oscar-nominated short films —  in Animated, Live Action and Documentary shorts — in 265 theaters via ShortsTV and Magnolia Pictures. Its widest first-weekend reach ever (67 more screens than last year) resulted in its highest-grossing opening weekend ever: a $912K total, good for a $3,442 per-screen average and possibly on its way to a $1 million total by the end of its run.

“Every year, the Oscar Nominated Shorts opens in the dead of winter, when there’s a dearth of new independent releases and compelling studio options,” Magnolia said Sunday. “It’s welcomed by patrons who see it year after year and who include it in their standard pre-Oscars viewing, as well as moviegoers just needing something fresh and new to see. This year’s program has sentiment, controversy, current events, some violence, talking animals, a trip to space – so, like usual, something for everyone.”

Among other openers, Gunpowder & Sky’s Lords of Chaos grossed $28K in four locations, averaging $7,021, while Good Deed Entertainment’s Matthew Broderick starrer To Dust played an exclusive engagement for $8,400. Menemsha Films bowed Heading Home: The Tale of Team Israel with seven playdates grossing $28,358 ($4,051 average). And Kino Lorber’s documentary The Gospel of Eureka played an exclusive New York engagement in its opening weekend for $5,200.

In other offerings this frame, Bleecker Street expanded Arctic starring Mads Mikkelsen to 15 runs in its second frame, grossing $82,619 for a slow $5,508 PTA. The survival drama opened in four theaters in its first weekend, taking in nearly $51K, averaging $12,720.

Bollywood’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga remained in 193 locations in its second outing. The Fox Star Studios release grossed $250K in North America, averaging $1,295 (-59%). Directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar, the feature grossed $606,775, averaging $3,144.

Lionsgate/Pantelion’s Perfectos Desconocido more than doubled its runs to 83 theaters in its fifth weekend, though it struggled. The title took in $32,500 in the three-day estimate, averaging $392. The gross was enough to bring it over seven figures, however, bringing its estimated cume to $1,000,870.

Also crossing a box office milestone this weekend is Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures’ sci-fi thriller Replicas, topping $4M. The title starring Keanu Reeves also had a slow weekend, however, taking in $8,400 in 29 theaters, averaging $290.

Amazon Studios’ Oscar-nominated feature Cold War by Best Director hopeful Pawel Pawlikowski is closing in on $3 million. In its eighth weekend, the feature grossed an estimated $500,859 in the three-day in 270 locations, averaging $1,855 and bringing its cume to over $2.88M.

Multiple Oscar-nominee The Favourite from Fox Searchlight topped $30M marking its third month in theaters. The feature, starring Oscar nominee Olivia Colman and helmed by Best Director nominee Yorgos Lanthimos, played 605 theaters in its 12th frame grossing $800K, averaging $1,322 and bringing its cume to an estimated $30,200,041.

Best Documentary nominee Free Solo is about to crest $16M. Released via National Geographic Documentary Film/Greenwich Entertainment, the feature grossed $307,200 ($2,008 PTA) brining its total to over $15.91M.

And Sony Classics’ The Wife starring Best Actress nominee Glenn Close is at over $9.1M in its 26th weekend of theatrical release. The title directed by Björn Runge grossed an estimated $100,015 Friday to Sunday, averaging $1,010.
