EastEnders loses out to Only Connect with overnight viewers below 3 million

EastEnders’ Monday night episode was overtaken in overnight ratings by brain scratching quiz show BBC Connect, which airs on sister channel BBC Two.

The soap, which recently had an autumn launch involving the return of Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks), a dramatic explosion and the exit of Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton), achieved a figure of 2.69 million versus Only Connect’s intake of 2.79 million.

However, with EastEnders being consistently one of the most requested BBC programmes on iPlayer, it is likely that this figure will change when consolidated figures take online viewing and catch up into account, which the overnight numbers do not include.

Typically, EastEnders can increase its rating by over a million once all of this is added.

Only Connect has been a staple favourite of BBC Two for some years. Presented by Victoria Coren-Mitchell, the contest sees walls of clues presented to teams who gain points based on how quickly they can guess the links.

Sounds easy right? Well if you think that, you’ve never seen an episode.

The quiz is notoriously difficult and is therefore a popular hit for professional quizzers though it’s certainly not impossible.

Even I got one right once.
