Detectives believe Victoria Cilliers may still be ‘under husband Emile’s spell’
Victoria Cilliers nearly died when her husband tried to murder her, but detectives believe he may still be ‘under his spell’.
The mother nearly died in 2015 after her chute catastrophically failed during a 2,650ft jump which left her with life threatening injuries.
Detectives eventually discovered the awful truth that her husband had attempted to murder her – and not for the first time.
The Parachute Murder Plot explores how Victoria could still be a "victim of a coercive controlling relationship".
Police believe Victoria, who declined to take part in the ITV documentary, may still be under a form of mind control.
Emile Cilliers’ sordid double life exposed on The Parachute Murder Plot – including affairs, prostitutes and glory holes
The first worrying signs came when Victoria helped her husband walk out of Winchester Crown Court in November 2017.
The prosecution went to painstaking lengths to make sure the jury understood the complex technical details of exactly how Emile had sabotaged Victoria’s parachute.
But the team’s two years of hard work were all for nothing as Victoria admitted she probably exaggerated how long he was alone with her parachute.
The police were saddened that she was willing to assist this man who had tried to kill her, once with the parachute and another time with a gas leak.
DC Maddie Hennah says: "And she actually said that she had lied during her interviews. She had fiddled with the gas pipe herself to see if she could something about it."
Emile then uploaded a series of other poorly shot You tube Videos of Emile singing popular songs about love and loyalty direct to the camera.
Believing this could have explained his hold over her, DC Hennah says: "He clearly still had a hold on her."
DI Paul Franklin adds: "I believe she just wanted us to send Emile home and let them get on with their lives."
His first wife, Nicolene Shepherd, reveals that she was also under his spell during their seven years together.
The mother of his eldest two children says: "I was under the Emile spell while I was with him and I believe she still is. You’re dealing with a different species of man with him. You have somebody that’s that good at lying and charming.
"Cause he’s so good at what he does and making you feel like you are the only person in the world. You’re the most important thing in the world, and yeah he promises you the Earth."
Di Franklin adds: "People had to be seen what this man really was like. What he was capable of. This is not just a naughty boy, a philanderer or a pantomime villain, this is someone that’s actually far more sinister. Uh, this is how he tricked this woman, controlled her until he tried to kill her and it was as cold as that."
Emile Cilliers was given a life sentence for two counts of attempted murder and reckless endangerment on his children.
He was jailed for 18 years for tampering with his wife’s parachute and trying to kill Victoria on another occasion by causing a gas leak at the family home in Wiltshire.
Victoria gave brief interviews shortly after the verdict but has since kept her silence and has not contacted the police.
When asked if she knows how Victoria is now, DC Hennah says: "I don’t. We sadly you know, have no contact with her. None at all. Um, she had become a victim of a coercive controlling relationship."
