Corrie replaces Summer Spellman as original actress quits before return

Coronation Street 's Summer Spellman is going to look very different when she returns to the cobbles next month, as the actress has been recast.

Summer took a break from the cobbles to stay with her grandmother earlier this year, but it won't be long until she comes back, and she'll be played by actress Harriet Bilby.

She was originally played by Matilda Freeman, who joined the soap in 2017, but the actress has decided to leave the role after three years.

Matilda revealed she'd decided to leave the show to explore other opportunities, as she said: "I'd like to say thank you to my second family, the cast, crew and viewers who have supported me during my time on the cobbles.

"I'd like to say thank you to my second family, the cast, crew and viewers who have supported me during my time on the cobbles."

She took to social media to give more information about her move, while also praising her castmates Daniel Brocklebank, who plays vicar Billy, Bruno Langley, who previously played Todd, and Peter Ash who plays Billy's partner Paul Foreman.

Matilda wrote: "After more than 3 years in Weatherfield I said goodbye to the cobbles in August. I’ve had the best family @Dan_Brocklebank @BrunoLangley @PeterAsh_85 and will miss them and so many of the cast and crew x."

She continued: "I felt it was time for a new role which I'm filming abroad next month.

"I can’t think of anyone better."

Summer's return comes as Todd Grimshaw, now played by Gareth Pierce, has finally come back to the cobbles after more than three years in hiding.

He originally left the cobbles with Summer after fearing that her grandmother would try and gain custody of her, taking Summer from him.

While in the run, it was later revealed that Todd assaulted a police officer, and Summer later returned to Corrie without him.

Fans will see Summer struggle to forgive Todd for abandoning her and Billy for such a long time, but will she be able to move on?

Actress Harriet said about the role: "I am so thrilled to be joining the cast of Coronation Street. My family have watched the show for years and I already feel part of the family.

"Matilda has wished me good luck, which was lovely!

"I’m looking forward to bringing Summer’s sass and sparkle to the screen."

Corrie continues on Wednesday at 7.30pm on ITV.
