Cameron Monaghan Is Following Emmy Rossum's Footsteps And Leaving 'Shameless'

*Cue hysterical crying*

Just over a month after Emmy Rossum announced her shocking exit from Shameless, Cameron Monaghan revealed that he is also departing from the series after nine years. This Sunday’s episode will mark Monaghan’s final farewell to Ian Gallagher, which means it will be an hour-long emotional punch to the gut.

Monaghan dropped the bombshell on social media and expressed tremendous gratitude to the cast and crew of the Showtime series. The actor also revealed he has known about this outcome since last year. Monaghan kept the news secret to preserve the integrity of the narrative and to give viewers a chance to fully experience Ian’s tumultuous and unpredictable journey.

“I have been a series regular on this show for roughly ten years,” Monaghan wrote in an Instagram post. “I was the tender age of fifteen when we shot the pilot, and I came of age in so many ways, both legally and personally. I was very lucky to mature and grow with this show. Experiencing so many firsts, maturing as an actor, a professional, and a human. In the process gaining friends, family, and the best coworkers a very lucky actor could ask for, and for this I can be nothing but gracious.”

“All good things come to an end,” he continued. “An old cliche, but one that rings true with a sincerity and clarity especially in moments like these. Everything ends.

The next episode will be my last. I have known since last year, but I didn’t want to give it away too early as I wanted this season to be a surprise for the audience, allowing them to experience Ian’s unsure journey with his character. This role has been a joy to inhabit, a wild and special ride, and I’d like to thank #Shameless as well as you, the viewers, for being there with him. Goodbye, Ian Clayton Gallagher. We’ll meet again?”

Although it’s unclear whether we’ll see Ian in the future, for now he’s leaving the Southside and his family for good. Much like Rossum’s character Fiona, Monaghan plays an integral part on the show. Ian is a beloved character who easily emerged as one of the standouts within the ensemble cast. His departure is a huge hit for the long-running drama series. It won’t be easy filling in the hole that he and Fiona leave behind.

Can you even imagine the Gallagher household without Ian and Fiona? It’s hard to imagine, but the show must go on — or should it?
