C4 to launch £1million gameshow Moneybags after ditching Davina McCall's Million Pound Drop

THERE’S still only one gameshow on TV with a million quid up for grabs – but pretty soon that’s going to change.

Channel 4 are making a show called Moneybags where contestants answer questions with the chance of grabbing a series of bags off a conveyer belt.

The bags each contain between £1,000 and £100,000.

Depending on the contents, some bags will see them disqualified, others will see them take home the cash inside — and the total amount available is a cool £1million.

A TV insider said: “A seven-figure jackpot is still the holy grail for gameshows, so this is a bold move by Channel 4. After all there’s still only one show on TV which has that prize and it’s ITV’s Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?

“But when those bags start moving along the conveyer belt that’s exactly how much money is contained inside. The contestants just have to be very smart and more than a little lucky.”

It’s not the first time Channel 4 has made a show with £1million at stake.

It launched The Million Pound Drop with Davina McCall in 2010 as a prime time Friday night show featuring members of the public and celebrities.

But that left our screens and returned in 2018 as a daytime show, £100k Drop. As the name suggests, it had a smaller prize but still had Davina as host. It was dropped altogether two years ago.

Moneybags is about to start filming in Manchester and could be on our screens by the end of this year with its own big-name host taking the reins. I reckon Channel 4 should give it to the brilliant Davina again.

TRACKSUITS YOU, ALESHA

WE’RE used to Alesha Dixon dazzling in glamorous dresses while judging Britain’s Got Talent.

But she even looks great here in the sort of kit most of us have been lounging around in at home during lockdowns.

She stepped out in the tracksuit for a walk in Sydney where she has been filming Australia’s Got Talent.

Sadly, the show has reportedly been halted by the latest local lockdown. At least Alesha has a comfy trackie to wear if she has to fly home.

Good Omens returns

THE second series of Good Omens will start filming later this year in Scotland, Amazon Prime Video has confirmed.

I revealed there would be a sequel to the first season of the fantasy drama, which is based on Sir Terry Pratchett’s books.

David Tennant will return as the demon Crowley and Michael Sheen, left with David, will once again play the angel Aziraphale.

RETURN OF PRINCE MALIQUE

MALIQUE Thompson-Dwyer is returning to Hollyoaks after two years away.

The actor – who plays Prince McQueen in the Channel 4 soap – quit the show in 2019 to pursue a career in reality television. But I can exclusively reveal that Malique will reprise his role in the coming months after signing a new deal.

He was on the set this week to film his comeback scenes. Since leaving the show he has appeared on Celebs Go Dating, Celebs Ex In The City and Celebs On The Farm.

Malique’s character Prince left the village to travel the world. He was heartbroken about wife Lily McQueen’s shock death from sepsis and realised he needed a break.

As he left the village for the last time, Prince turned for one final look and said: “I’ll never forget you, Lily.”

He also hinted at his comeback, saying: “The door is open. My character is still alive, so you never know.” We do now Malique.

SONNY’S RISING AS THE MOON

EASTENDERS has recast Tommy Moon – with a fourth actor to play him in ten years.

Newcomer Sonny Kendall has taken over the role on the BBC1 soap vacated by Shay Crotty earlier this year.

In one scene available to watch on iPlayer now he plays football in the cafe in front of his exasperated mum Kat (Jessie Wallace) and her boyfriend Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden).

Shay, who had played the role since 2015 when he was just five, heaped praise on his co-stars in a touching Instagram post.

He wrote: “Thank you @bbceastenders for having me and making me part of the team! I’ve had the best time with the best family.

“Gonna miss you so much mummy Kat (Jessie)!

“It was just a such pleasure working with you and dad @theshanerichie, I learnt so much from you both and laughed so much!! ”
