BBC Strictly’s Ellie Leach’s Coronation Street co-stars celebrate her win after soap ‘axe’
Numerous Coronation Street stars have taken to social media to congratulate Ellie Leach on her Strictly Come Dancing win, after she and Vito Coppola lifted the Glitterball trophy.
Ellie, 22, and Vito, 31, were crowned the champions of the 2023 series on Saturday, 16 December, after facing Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin, as well as Bobby Brazier and Dianne Buswell in the grand final.
Ellie's former soap co-stars were all rooting for her to take home the trophy and wasted no time in sharing congratulatory messages on social media, including the likes of Lucy Fallon, Colson Smith and Elle Mulvaney.
Colson, 25, who plays Craig Tinker in Coronation Street, has been one of Ellie's biggest supporters throughout the entire competition, with the actor having thrown viewing parties and continued to champion her on social media.
He watched the Strictly final with pals, including Ellie's cousin and fellow ex-Corrie star Brooke Vincent, with the group all donning masks of Ellie's face as they cheered her on.
"Champion you deserve it mate @ellielouiseleach," Colson wrote on Instagram after Ellie was announced as the winner of Strictly, alongside a sweet photo of the pair backstage at the BBC show.
Several other Coronation Street favourites congratulated Ellie, with Georgia Taylor saying: "We are bursting with pride @ellielouiseleach you're a class act," while Sally Dynevor wrote: "So proud of you Ellie. Congratulations. You have reached the stars and we all love you #strictlycomedancing."
Elle Mulvaney wrote: "So well deserved @ellielouiseleach," and Harriet Bibby said: "Well done Ellie and Vito!!"
Samia Longchambon said she was in "awe" of Ellie achievements, before adding: "AMAZING!! So happy for you guys #winners," while Lucy Fallon said she was "sobbing" as she watched Ellie and Vito lift the Glitterball trophy.
Ellie portrayed Faye Windass on Coronation Street from 2011 until 2023. She excited the soap in July, and while it was initially claimed that Ellie had chosen to leave, it's since been reported that ITV bosses told the star they could "see no future for the character", resulting in her axing.
Her Corrie co-stars were reportedly unimpressed with the way Ellie was treated on the soap, and had vowed to get her to the Strictly final as a way of supporting her after her soap axing.
A source told The Sun: "At the time she said she had quit but it was always seen as an axe. It caused major upset behind the scenes because co-stars felt she was treated really badly. So they want her to become a big BBC star and stick two fingers up to the powers that be."
