Jamie Dornan is the lead in the BBC’s latest hit drama series The Tourist. The show has gone down a treat with viewers, many of whom binged the drama over the festive period. As a result, the show helped break BBC iPlayer streaming records with its impressive viewership.
The Tourist proved to be a massive hit with viewers, smashing records on the iPlayer over the holidays.
The BBC has since released its official streaming figures from the week of December 27 through January 3.
During this time, The Tourist debuted and pushed iPlayer to its biggest festive day ever on January 2 with 22 million streams across the service.
The figures show the first series of The Tourist was accessed on the BBC streaming service 8.9 million times over the festive period.
The drama fell just short of the overall iPlayer streaming leader as Happy New Year Live drew in an impressive 10.5 million streams.
In terms of individual episodes, A Very British Scandal’s new series led the week with 2.3 million streams for episode one.
Meanwhile, The Tourist’s own debut episode wasn’t far behind, earning 1.6 million streams.
The gripping series seems to have hooked audiences straight away with the mysterious plot.
The six-part series follows the challenging journey of a man who wakes up from a car crash with no knowledge of who he is.
Desperate to uncover the truth, his search for answers propels him through the vast and unforgiving outback of Australia.
The Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie leads the cast and is joined by stars such as Danielle Macdonald and Shalom Brune-Franklin.
After finishing the series, many viewers have praised the drama, taking to Twitter to share their thoughts.
“Just finished watching #TheTourist on @BBCiPlayer and I am shookethhhhhhh. The score on that final scene got me, like such a brilliant series,” Pollyanna O’Brien commented.
“OK, just finished watching #TheTourist, what a gripping thriller! Don’t normally tweet about TV as I don’t watch that much, but it’s edge of the seat watching based in outback Aus. On BBC One in the UK and I think HBO in the US. It’s #amazing, just watch it!” Peter Robinson enthused.
After seeing the success of The Tourist, its writers Harry and Jack Williams have said they’d be keen to make a second series.
However, the duo admitted it could be a challenge to make more of the hit drama.
“I would love to make this show again with these people,” Harry remarked.
He continued: “I’m not entirely sure it’s possible. I love the tone, I love the world.
“It’s been our lives for three years and we’ve been very, very involved with it, more so than any other show.
“We’ve loved every minute. Normally you’re sick of it by this point having watched 900 cuts of one episode but I still love it and I’d love to do it again,” the writer told Radio Times.
The Tourist is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
