A segment in the BBC chat programme The One Show showed a former doctor who has put a huge effort into helping front line workers during the pandemic being thanked by an array of people in her community and beyond. Following the segment, Alex was tearful and said it was “one of the best” [thank yous] they had done.
Presenting the show’s thank you section, Alex said: “We are so grateful to people who have gone above and beyond in this last year.
“And every Thursday as you know we like to say than you to one of those people.”
Fellow host Amol Rajan added: “When the pandemic hit, retired doctor Kate was considered clinically vulnerable and had to shield, but it’s safe to say she’s kept herself busy.”
Kate’s friend nominated her for a The One Show thank you, explaining: “I want her to appreciate the impact that she has had.
“She [Kate] was frustrated by the lack of PPE available. She was one of the founding members of sewing for Kingston, who made and distributed over 50,000 items to front line workers across the UK.”
Kate soon rallied teams together to support NHS workers, as well as care homes and refugee groups, and soon the volunteers grew to a huge community group.
Alex said: “So despite needing to safely shield herself, Doctor Kate has always found time to help key workers who really need support.”
The team surprised Kate by getting presenter Dermot O’Leary to phone her up live from Radio 2.
Kate’s husband Andrew was in on the plan and knew Dermot would be calling Kate to thank her.
When she answered, Dermot asked Kate to step outside her front door.
And when she got there, a crowd of people had gathered, cheering, to thank her for all the work she had done, with Andrew next to her as she got emotional.
After it had finished, Amol said: “That’s got to be one of the best of all time.”

An emotional Alex agreed: “One of the best. And the way her husband was looking at her.”
Choking up, she added: “That got me.” The One Show has been inviting people across the UK to send a special thank you to someone each Thursday who has gone above and beyond.
Today’s heartfelt thank yous seemed to move Alex, who just last month announced live on the show that she is pregnant with her third child.
The presenter Alex has been hosting The One Show since 2010, mainly working alongside Matt Baker.
Matt had to quit last year to help with his family farm in Durham after his mum suffered an injury.
Having fronted the show together since 2011, the pair were the longest-serving partnership in the programme’s history, becoming an iconic favourite with viewers.
Since then, several presenters are often seen sitting on the signature sofa next to Alex, including Ronan, Amol and other guest hosts.
Elsewhere on tonight’s show, Alex and Amol chatted to Fred Sirieix to discuss his new series of Snackmasters on Channel 4.
The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
