One Direction reunion: Would Zayn Malik ever join the band again?
Zayn Malik says he’s ‘happy to be back’ in 2014 interview
One Direction did not get back together in 2020, as many were hoping given it was the band’s 10th anniversary. They all, except for one of them, posted thankful messages to fans to celebrate the anniversary. The one who did not was Zayn Malik, who left the group early to pursue a solo career – but would he ever rejoin?
It is hard to think of One Direction without the full line-up.
Even though 1D continued as a foursome, releasing their fifth album Made in the A.M. without Zayn Malik, it never felt complete.
Less than a year after Zayn left, the band went on hiatus which was supposed to only last for 18 months, but instead has continued through for almost five years.
Many had hoped, on the band’s 10th anniversary on July 23, 2020, the group would get back together.

Instead, the four members all posted to their social media accounts, praising the fans for keeping with them all these years.
The conspicuous absence was a post from Zayn, who posted an image of him with liquid eyeliner on July 31, looking sad, which some thought was a late anniversary post.
The post had no caption, however, so it may be the image was just another social media moment, with Zayn specifically avoiding posting on the anniversary itself.
This all suggests he will not be heading back into the band any time soon, and a previous interview with him makes it clear the boys, at that time, were not even on speaking terms.
Speaking to British Vogue in 2018, Zayn said: “I ain’t spoke to any of them for a long time, to be honest with you. That’s just the way it is.
“There’s things that happen and things that were said after I left… Snide things.
“Small things that I would never have expected.
“That’s just the way it is. People move on, people grow apart, people grow up.”
He also spoke about not even being able to enjoy the experience of performing, despite his going on to make solo records without the group.
He added: “I’m able to look on it as something that was an amazing experience, which I was never even able to say until just recently…
“I think back to the performances towards the end, when we were in stadiums, I wasn’t really ever able to enjoy the experience. The machine had gone too fast…
“We went from theatres, to arenas, to stadiums – there was never any sort of bridge between. Just boom, boom, boom.
“I guess that kind of progression to any mind – but especially when you’re 17, 18 – it kind of affects you a little bit.
“People take it different ways – especially when there are five different personalities. The relationships had broken apart.”
Liam Payne teased fans about a potential reunion around the time of the 10th anniversary, and confirmed Zayn would not be a part of it, though this never came to fruition in the way fans expected.
He told DJ Alessio on Instagram: “I did speak to Niall again on FaceTime today though and he was outside on his balcony sunbathing and whatever.
“He’s in London as well. Most of us are in London.
“We’ve been trying to arrange the first group FaceTime at the moment.
“You can come and fill in for Zayn. Join the band.”
Their special project which Liam teased was eventually a short film on a new website, where fans could remember all the best parts about the band’s time together, so no reunion was taking place.
However, the other four boys seem to be in touch and on good terms, but it is not clear whether Zayn has integrated back into the fold with his former band mates.
