Michael Douglas Had a Strange Night Celebrating His Golden Globe Win With George Harrison and Bob Dylan
Michael Douglas got a shock when he won his first Golden Globe in 1988. However, Douglas got even more of a surprise when music legends George Harrison and Bob Dylan showed up at his hotel room after the awards to help him celebrate his win.
It was a strange night.
Michael Douglas won his first Golden Globe in 1988
In 1988, Douglas walked away with his first Golden Globe. He won Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for Oliver Stones’ Wall Street.
Douglas thanked Stone in his acceptance speech for giving him such a great role. He starred as the corporate raider Gordon Gekko, who later mentors Charlie Sheen’s character, Bud Fox.
Douglas also won an Oscar for Best Actor for the role. He went up against William Hurt, who recently died on Mar. 13, Marcello Mastroianni, Robin Williams, and Jack Nicholson.
Douglas celebrated his Golden Globe win with George Harrison and Bob Dylan
The most exciting part of Douglas’ night happened after the Golden Globes. Although he’d won, Douglas didn’t have any plans. George and Dylan changed that quite quickly. The actor explained his strange night with the pair of musicians on BBC’s The One Show. He said he saw George before he left for the awards.
Douglas explained, “I was coming out of the hotel to go to the Golden Globes, and there was George sitting there. I was like, ‘Wow.’ I said, ‘Such a big fan of yours,’ and everything else, we talked for a minute. I went off to the Golden Globes, won the Golden Globe.
“You know, by the time you go through the press and everything else, you come out, and everybody’s going home. I went back to the hotel, feeling a little pity and everything else. The phone rang, it’s like about 12 o’clock at night, [adopting a British accent] ‘Hello Michael, it’s George.’ ‘Yeah, hi George.’ He said, ‘Me and my mate are out here, can we come by and say hi?’ ‘Yeah, yeah, come by.’
Douglas had no idea who George’s mate was or what would happen next.
Dylan’s dog was the star of the show
When Douglas opened his hotel room, he had no idea that he’d find George with Dylan… and Dylan’s dog.
“Knock on the door, George Harrison walks in with Bob Dylan,” Douglas said. “Bob Dylan has the biggest dog you’ve ever seen in your life. Comes on in, doesn’t say much. So I said, ‘Wow, I just wasn’t feeling celebrating.’ So get some caviar order up.
The best part of the bizarre night happened next. “I’m talking to George, I have to keep-this dog keeps walking back and cross. Next thing I know-Bob Dylan hasn’t said anything-the next thing I know, the dog smells the caviar. He goes [imidates a dog slurping up food]. He starts licking up-and I’m going, ‘Bob Dylan’s dog eating the caviar.’ And Bob Dylan hasn’t said a word yet, the whole night.
“Then finally, he looks over, and he goes, ‘Far out, the dog loves caviar.’”
So, Douglas got two surprises, one stranger than the other. Forget the Golden Globe; there’s probably a fan or two who would love to meet Bob Dylan’s dog instead.
This is yet another example that even celebrities were in the dark about what would happen while meeting George and Dylan. George specifically has had more than a few bizarre meetings with other celebrities.
