Love Island’s Theo Campbell ‘sues Wayne Lineker’s club’ over champagne injury
Theo Campbell is reportedly suing Wayne Lineker's Ibiza club after he suffered a champagne cork injury at the club in 2019.
The former Love Island star was hit in the eye by a champagne cork whilst partying at Lineker's Ibiza club, O Beach, which is a popular celebrity hotspot.
The 30-year-old reality star and former 400m runner was left needing emergency surgery in August 2019 after a champagne bottle was popped close to his face.
Campbell's right eyeball was split by the cork, meaning he had to get 11 stitches on his cut eyelid and surgery to repair his cornea.
However, it is currently unclear as to whether or not the sight will ever return in his damaged right eye.
Last year, Theo launched legal proceedings against Mountain Ibiza SL, who own the Ibiza club, following the brutal eye injury.
However, the company, which is owned by Gary Lineker's brother Wayne, has denied all liability.
It has now been reported by The Sun that the Love Island star is seeking "hundreds of thousands" of pounds in compensation.
The dad-of-one's lawyers have apparently said that his ruptured cornea has prevented him from taking part in the MTV show The Challenge.
The former Team GB athlete had previously won £145,000 as a runner-up in a previous series, but the representatives said he could have bagged the top prize of £750,000.
The High Court also heard that the sprinter's eye injury has stopped him from carving out a "significant media presence".
At the time of the incident, Theo took to his Instagram page where he wrote: "So yeah, basically two eye surgeries later after a really unfortunate accident, I've lost all vision in my right eye as it got split in half.
"Who would've thought a champagne cork would be the end of me?
"But I still have one eye left, looking at the bright side of things."
Last year, Theo issued a statement through his solicitors saying: "I'm a positive person and try and remain upbeat but as time goes on the chances of my sight getting back to normal become reduced. I'm speaking with doctors about what may or may not be possible but I also have a number of questions about what happened to me.
"I don't know what the future may hold with regards to my sight but I feel that the least I deserve is answers to what happened and why.
"Bringing this case was something that hasn't been done lightly but I feel that at present it's the best opportunity for me to get the answers I deserve."
His legal team added: "Theo Campbell has instructed lawyers to commence a High Court legal case on his behalf after he suffered a serious eye injury at a club in Ibiza.
"Theo suffered a cut eyelid which required 11 stitches and a penetrating cornea injury. He was hit in the eye by a cork from a bottle during an official Champagne spray party organised by the venue.
"Theo has instructed specialist lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to pursue his case. His legal team has now issued High Court proceedings against Ice Mountain Ibiza SL, the company which trades as O Beach Ibiza."
