Loose Women’s Denise Welch opens up about ‘heartbreaking’ health battle
Denise Welch opened up about her "heartbreaking" health battle that shocked her followers.
The Loose Women panellist, 63, took to social media where she revealed that she suffered from severe post-natal depression following the birth of her first child, Matt Healy.
The TV personality posted a throwback 80s snap showing her pregnancy bump with her first born, Matty, who's now 33.
In the throwback photo, the former Waterloo Road actress can be seen with her bump on display as she pulls a timid smile for the camera.
In the caption, the 63-year-old explained the on-going depression and "panic" she felt following the birth of her son.
Denise raised that during the time she didn't "eat for weeks" and was "almost catatonic" following a panic attack.
She started off by saying: "It's maternal mental health week. This is two days before Matty was born, April 1989. Happy, excited, nervous. I had a brilliant pregnancy and wasn't even bothered when he was nine days late!
"Long labour but he was a healthy 8lbs and we were thrilled with our beautiful boy. I wasn't anxious. I loved the first few days even though he cried a lot.
She added: "A week later out of nowhere, during a walk with my mum, my life changed forever. After my first ever panic attack a feeling of unreality came over me and within an hour I was in a thick, black, terrifying depression. I didn't eat for weeks. I was almost catatonic."
The mother-of-two then told followers that she felt ignored by doctors as her questions remained unaswered.
Denise said: "Post natal depression robbed me of any joy for months.
"I felt nothing. The GP was terrible and knew nothing. I tried for 20 yrs to get someone to listen to me that I felt my illness was hormonal. No one really helped me."
Fans have since rallied behind the star with supportive messages after she made the revelation.
"We all love you Denise," one wrote.
"Heartbreaking what you went through," a second remarked.
A third said: "Thank you for sharing and being so brutally honest about what you went through….your honesty helps so many."
