In 2016, she was first diagnosed with a brain tumour, and Queen of Katwe director Mira Nair reportedly helped fund her treatment in India.

However, it was later reported Ugandan doctors were quoted saying "they did not have the necessary equipment".

Shortly after her surgery in April 2016, Nikita was diagnosed with cancer and she underwent radio therapy in July 2016.

She was given the all-clear in 2017 but last year was found to have another tumour.
