Carol Vorderman felt she was ‘forced’ to leave Countdown

Carol Vorderman is an iconic figure of British television who made her way there through her role in the daytime classic, Countdown.

Now, following the announcement that fellow-tv legend Anne Robinson is due to be stepping away from the role she has had with the show that she has had since 2021, Carol’s name is being thrown up again and again as a possible replacement.

According to the Mirror, Countdown bosses are “desperate” to get her back. Responding to the rumours she said: "Thank you to all of you saying such lovely things about the possibility of me returning to Countdown.

"You're very kind & it would be an honour but I want to wish whoever is the lucky human to be the new host all the love and 9 letter words in the world #CountWell#HappyDays."

Carol worked on the show for 26 years but finally, in 2008, placed her last letter on the board – but why?

Why did Carol Vorderman leave Countdown?

The reasons behind why Carol Vorderman quit countdown are shrouded in controversy.

TheBBCreported in 2008 that Vorderman was ‘forced’ to quit the popular show having been asked to take a 90% pay cut.

She was reportedly told that the show had survived the death of host Richard Whiteley and would "easily survive without you".

She had been on the show since it started in 1982 and wanted the world to “know the truth” behind why she quit.

Speaking at the time, Channel 4 said: "We never comment on presenters' salaries."

At the time, ahead of her decision to leave, she was thought to be earning around £900,000.

Her agent, John Miles, said that she had been prepared to take a paycut of one third due to budget constraints put on the show at the time.

He said: "I was stunned that my client's 26 loyal years were discarded in such a cavalier manner.

In a statement, Carol said: "I am devastated that my joyous time with one of the best programmes on TV has ended this way."

"I was happy to continue doing the numbers and letters for years to come," she said.

"I wish all of my friends and colleagues every success in the future. I'll miss them all."

Rachel Riley, who came in to replace Carol after she left, said in 2017: “I’ve still not spoken to Carol. I’ve never actually met her. I don’t know how our paths haven’t crossed in all this time.

“She was brilliant on Countdown. I used to watch her on it when I was a kid. It would always be on when I got home from school.

“So I’ve got nothing but respect for her. I’m sure our paths will cross one day.

“I wouldn’t ask her for presenting tips though…I think that would be patronising. But I also think with any job when you take over from someone you’ve just got to be yourself.
