Earlier this month Adele announced she would be releasing a brand new song from her upcoming album. The track, Easy On Me, was released at midnight in the UK overnight, hitting YouTube as well as a number of streaming platforms. The heart wrenching song is the first glimpse into the star’s fourth studio album, 30. And, if the lyrics are anything to go by, it is sure to be an emotional journey.
Adele opens the music video with footage of her leaving a home with a suitcase and a full car, before making the pilgrimage to her next destination.
The star’s exit from her house in the video could be seen as a metaphorical exit from her marriage, after she got divorced at some point in 2019.
The song’s first lyrics croon: “I know there is hope in these waters / But I can’t bring myself to swim / When I am drowning in this silence,” perhaps referring to the hope that her marriage would survive when it was beginning to falter.
Adele goes on: “I changed who I was to put you both first / but now I give up.”
These lyrics are no doubt referring to Adele’s ex-husband Simon Konecki and their son, Angelo.
The chorus of Adele’s Easy On Me are maybe the most tough to listen to.
She could be thought of as begging her ex-husband for forgiveness for walking away.
She cries: “Go easy on me, baby / I was still a child / Didn’t get the chance to / Feel the world around me / I had no time to choose what I chose to do / So go easy on me.”
Adele goes on to reveal: “I had good intentions / And the highest hopes / But I know, right now / It probably doesn’t even show.”
The emotion and heartbreak Adele felt is palpable in the lyrics of Easy On Me.
The track was apparently the first song she wrote for her new album, 30.
The Rolling in the Deep singer recently revealed the wrote the song back when she originally got separated in 2018.
In the eight hours the song has been on YouTube it has garnered more than 11 million views.
Quite the feat for a song written as a letter to her son, Angelo.
She recently explained: “I wanted to explain to him through this record, when he’s in his 20s or 30s, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness.
“It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to heal.” (Via Vogue)
Adele’s album, 30, is due out on November 19. She announced the release of the new record on her social media accounts, where she also wrote about the turmoil she has experienced in recent years.
She said: “I was certainly nowhere near where I’d hoped to be when I first started it nearly 3 years ago.
“Quite the opposite actually. I rely on routine and consistency to feel safe, I always have.”
