The Strange Activity Zendaya Started Doing In Quarantine
Zendaya Coleman may have started out as a Disney star, but she’s a long way from the realm of being a child actor now. In fact, Zendaya has opened up about her negative experiences with Disney and has been very critical of the “Disney-girl persona.” She’s stayed close with some from that previous era, especially Bella Thorne. She’s also close to her Euphoria co-star, Hunter Schafer, and the two have a really special bond. Being in Euphoria was really transformative for Zendaya on many levels, but especially in the way it made her be more open emotionally.
But life changed for Zendaya the same way it changed for everyone with the outbreak of COVID-19. Zendaya was working on the film Malcolm & Marie, which was being worked on in California during June and July 2020, just as the pandemic ground the world to a halt. The entire cast and crew filmed under extremely strict protocols to adhere to safety guidelines. So while Zendaya was in quarantine during this time, she started doing one hilarious activity to help pass the time.
Zendaya got into a different character every day
Zendaya spoke about the experience of filming Malcolm & Marie in California during the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview with Carrie Mulligan for Variety, Zendaya explained, “We created a bubble, essentially, once you were in this place in Carmel. It was a resort, kind of, but it had different houses and was on this huge plot of land with a farm. We brought everything we needed and stayed there.”
Zendaya explained what it was like to be in quarantine at this time. “I literally, while I was in quarantine, I would do this thing to keep me motivated,” she began. “I live with my assistant, who’s also like a brother to me. I told him, ‘I’ll do some physical activity — I think it’s good for me.’ I have a whole bunch of wigs, from many years of being on red carpets, and I would put on a different wig and be a different character every day, and put on this performance for him for like an hour every day.”
Malcolm & Marie is slated to hit Netflix on Feb. 5, 2021, according to the streaming giant, so fans can see the artistic payoff from Zendaya’s funny quarantine activity.
