Live-Action ‘Tom and Jerry’ and Animated ‘Scooby Doo’ Movies Coming Soon

Warner Bros.

A live-action hybrid “Tom and Jerry” movie is in the works at Warner Bros., with Tim Story (“Ride Along,” “Fantastic Four,” “Think Like a Man,” “Shaft”) in talks to direct.Variety shared that news, along with an update on a new animated Scooby-Doo movie: Chris Columbus — director of “Home Alone” and the first two “Harry Potter” movies — has jumped on board as a creative producer.
Warner Animation Group is reportedly aiming for a balance of animation and live-action hybrid movies, with several versions of both in the works.
“Space Jam 2” and “Wile E. Coyote vs. ACME” are two other hybrids currently in development. Variety said “Tom and Jerry” is expected to be the first such hybrid to film in 2019. According to their report…

“For that film, the plan is to shoot in the real world with animated versions of the familiar cat and mouse duo. Sources also say that since Tom and Jerry didn’t speak and relied on physical comedy to draw laughs, this version will stick to that style and not cast actors to voice the duo. That decision should also help add to the international appeal of the film.”

In terms of the animated Scooby-Doo movie, Variety said that one is expected to release in the first quarter of 2020. Chris Columbus will be producing alongside director Tony Cervone.
The Scooby gang was last seen on screen in the 2004 live-action hybrid “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.” (Fun fact: That movie was written by James Gunn. So was the first “Scooby-Doo” movie in that franchise, in 2002. Gunn said his first cut for that was edgier and rated R.)
Other WB animated features still in development include “Jetsons,” “Flintstones” and “Wacky Races” movies.Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook.
