The untold truth of Ann Marie

Ann Marie first gained attention for her 2018 song “Secret” featuring YK Osiris. The song spent four weeks on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart in 2019 (via People) and received, at the time of this writing, over 82 million views on YouTube. The singer, who hails from Englewood in the South Side of Chicago, was discovered at a G Herbo concert in Chicago in 2017 and signed with Interscope Records in 2019. “Ann Marie is the prototype for today’s artist,” Interscope’s EVP of urban operations, Nicole Wyskoarko, told Variety. “She’s developed and cultivated a dedicated fan base using the tools of today while understanding the pace and quality of product needed to succeed in the modern music landscape.”

Her budding career has already garnered praise. Rolling Stone wrote that Ann Marie, “offers an alternative, a sound modeled on the upbeat singers of the late ’90s and early 2000s rather than the dystopian haze put forward more recently.” The magazine also compared the singer to H.E.R., and called her 2019 full-length project, Tripolar 2, “an easy frontrunner for one of the best R&B albums of 2019.” Other work from her includes Unf***witable, Tripolar, Pretty Psycho, and an EP, Misunderstood.

Ann Marie’s music isn’t the only reason she’s made headlines. Read on to learn why this lauded singer is in the news for a whole different reason.

Ann Marie is arrested in Atlanta after allegedly shooting a man in the head

Ann Marie was booked into jail on December 2 after allegedly shooting a man in the head. The 25-year-old singer was charged with possession of a firearm during commission of a felony and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to People. The police were called to the scene at International Buckhead Hotel after someone heard the gunshots and called 911, according to CBS 46

The 24-year-old man the officers discovered was somewhat responsive and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was reported to be in critical condition. Ann Marie claimed a gun had fallen off the table and hit the man, who she identified as a friend from Chicago. According to the police report, Ann Marie had to be removed from the scene by officers, as she was screaming hysterically and continued asking if the victim was alive or dead.

This isn’t the “Secret” singer’s first brush with the law. According to Gossip on This, she’s been arrested twice prior to this incident. Once was in August 2018 for speeding, driving without a valid license, and failure to have a license on person stemming from an incident in 2017. Ann Marie was arrested again in November 2020 on a simple battery charge. She was released on a $1,500 surety bond.

We at Nicki Swift hope for his speedy recovery.
