The real reason Charlamagne Tha God canceled Kanye’s TimesTalk
“The Breakfast Club” radio host Charlamagne Tha God was scheduled to have a TimesTalk with Kanye West about mental health but canceled it at the last minute.
At the time, Charlamagne gave a vague explanation on social media.
“Normalizing being mentally healthy is a conversation that I really wanted to have with Kanye because he’s been so vocal about his own mental health struggles,” he wrote. “Unfortunately I think to have that conversation with him right now would not be productive and a total distraction from the point of the convo which is to eradicate the stigma of mental health especially in the black community.”
West previously revealed he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Charlamagne elaborated on his explanation on Tuesday night while appearing on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.”
“I felt like everyone was bypassing that conversation. Even when he sat down with TMZ and Harvey Levin, he talked about not being on his meds and Harvey just kind of breezed past it. I’m like, ‘Uhh that’s where the period that should’ve been on the sentence,” Charlamagne explained to Colbert. “There’s nothing else to talk about after that. Let’s have a conversation about that. Why are you not on your medication? … I think he needed to figure that out.”
Charlamagne doubled down on the fact that he felt his conversation with West would’ve been more of a “distraction” than anything else.
“For what I’m trying to do which is to elevate the conversation of mental health in the black community and eradicate the stigma around mental health, I just didn’t think it would be a good conversation,” he continued. “It would be a distraction.”
But when Charlamagne called Kanye’s team to cancel, he got a surprising response. “They were all kind of relieved,” he said. “They just felt like that was the best thing.”
