Stacey Dooley: ‘I feel content with my behaviour’ Strictly star addresses controversy
Strictly Come Dancing winner Stacey Dooley, 32, visited Uganda to shoot for Comic Relief 2019 and shared pictures of her trip on Instagram. One picture saw her holding a child with the caption: “OB.SESSSSSSSSSSED,” followed by a broken heart emoji. Stacey’s antics were slammed by Labour MP David Lammy, 46, who accused her of perpetuating “tired and unhelpful stereotypes” about Africa. In a lengthy tweet, in view of his 512,000 followers, he said he doesn’t have a personal problem with Stacey but said: “The world does not need any more white saviours.
“As I’ve said before, this just perpetuates tired and unhelpful stereotypes.
“Let’s instead promote voices from across the continent of Africa and have serious debate.”
Stacey addressed the controversy at the Hay Festival 2019 last week, telling the crowd she is content with her behaviour and would do it again.
The BBC documentary maker began telling the audience she was yet to hear from David directly, despite calling him to discuss the situation.
According to The Guardian, she said: “I wonder, and I’m speculating because he hasn’t come to me, I wonder if he thought I had just done Strictly and thought ‘Right, I’m going to go and help all these countries in Africa now,’ show that I’m this holier-than-thou do-gooder.”
Explaining why she had shared pictures of her trip, she explained she had been sharing pictures of her encounters with children while making documentaries for many years.
I know how to conduct myself. I know how to behave
Stacey added the idea of just walking up to a child with no existing relationship for a picture was “farcical”.
“I know how to conduct myself. I know how to behave,” she added.
Stacey went on to say: “Ultimately, the only people I care about are the people on the ground. I was texting them yesterday.
“They’re very happy with how we behaved. We had consent from the family to use the picture. On my part I feel OK with what we did.”
Elaborating on the picture with the young child on her Instagram, she continued: “The little boy was a sweetheart.
“We spent time with his granddad.
“We were there for two and a half days in that village. We asked if we could have a picture.
“We asked if we could use the picture. I feel content with my behaviour.”
Elsewhere, Stacey was at the centre of more headlines earlier this year after her ex-boyfriend Sam Tucknott, 30, claimed she is in a relationship with Kevin Clifton, 36.
Stacey and Sam are believed to have split up in December after five years together.
Sam, a personal trainer, said he found a message on Stacey’s phone after they split, which seemingly confirmed her relationship with Kevin.
The pair are yet to confirm if they are an item, but have been pictured together multiple times including leaving the same hotel just minutes apart last month.
