Angel Strawbridge, 43, spoke up about a strange realisation about something that occurred when she moved to live in France. The star spoke to Nihal Arthanayake on BBC Radio 5 Live about this on January 6 2022.
Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree have graced Channel 4 viewers’ screens with Escape to the Chateau since 2016.
Nihal asked Angel recently whether or not she experienced culture shock when arriving in France.
He questioned whether her “Britishness” as evidenced on the show she stars in, Escape To the Chateau, got in the way of living well when she was in France.
He said: “When you first got to France, coming with your Britishness, going back seasons of Escape to the Chateau, it must have been quite challenging, shall we say, when you need to get things done.”
The star replied, saying that it certainly was a challenge.
She said: “The lunch breaks, yes.
“We’d have our trolley full of DIY stuff that we needed to get back and get on with.
“Every minute was tight and really important.
Her husband, Dick Strawbridge then chimed in.
He said: “Except for two hours in the shops you get kicked out!”
Angel then added that Sundays were particularly difficult.
“Nothing is open on Sundays.”
She then explained: “…And this did shock us. August came about.
“(Dick) ordered some wood at the end of July and the guy said ‘yeah I’m back in September.’”
The three of them laughed, and Angel went on to explain that when she tried to order flowers in August, she was told that they were closed.
She expressed her shock, saying: “You’re a florist! You can’t shut for the whole of August!”
But Dick continued, contrary to Angel’s frustrations, explaining that the situation wasn’t as bad as it might sound.
He said: “When you get used to the mindset…
“I loved the fact that the restaurants shut in our local town and in our local town that’s where people come on holidays.”
Escape to the Chateau is available to watch on All4.
