Shaun Wallace: The Chase star admits he was rooting for Beat The Chasers player to win

Beat the Chasers: Bradley Walsh mocks Shaun Wallace

Beat The Chasers returned with a vengeance last week, and the popular ITV show has already seen hopefuls walk away with some big money jackpots after taking on the stars of the original quiz show, The Chase. While the aim of the game is for the chasers to get the contestant to walk away empty handed, Shaun Wallace revealed there was a moment he was actually rooting for one of the players to win against them.

I really did want him to win

In a recent interview with ITV ahead of the first episode of the new series, he spoke of his heartbreak as the contestant lost out.

“There’s a young guy who missed out on a big sum of money,” he said.

“I really did want him to win. All he needed was one correct answer and he got a few wrong in a row.”

He added: “It was heart-breaking to see.”

Not wanting to spoil what was to come, Shaun didn’t disclose the amount the contestant lost or their name, but by putting two and two together we might have identified who he was referring to…

Contestant Rahim appeared on the show on Sunday evening and he instantly captured the hearts of viewers and host Bradley Walsh.

The student decided to take on all five of the chasers at once for the jackpot prize of £100,000, only to be caught out at the last minute.

Commended for bravery, the youngster who revealed he had 13 GCSE’s, told Bradley: “I’m not losing anything and I got to meet you.”

Clearly touched, Brad replied: “More importantly, I got to meet you.”

“I’m only here once so I think I’m going to take the five,” Rahim announced, as the audience cheered him on and the host gave him a pep-talk.

And while he dreamt of heading to the Seychelles with his jackpot prize, it seems the nerves started to get to him.

Rahim rapidly began to stumble over some of his answers and taking too long, even passing four questions at the end.

Soon enough, the chasers did what they do best and poor Rahim went home with nothing.

Bradley called him a “brilliant player” and assured him that one day he would return as one of the quiz champions, while viewers aired their views on social media, with some calling for a GoFundMe to be set up in the teenager’s name.

As the new series, which airs over seven nights this week, is in full swing, tensions are running high as the chasers do whatever it takes to maintain their genius.

But Shaun admitted there are no grudges held behind the scenes, despite what viewers may see on-air.

When asked about whether the inevitable frustrations on set continue backstage, he responded: “Not from my perspective.

“If anyone wants to hold a grudge, that’s a matter for them.”

Well, it is a game show after all!

Beat The Chasers returns at 9pm tonight on ITV.
